Senate Coverage -- (January '06)
Thomas ^ | 1-3-06 | US Congress

Posted on 01/03/2006 7:57:16 AM PST by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

Yeah that was when the Senate (actually, just Senator Warner) travelled all the way back to Washington (Warner crossed the river from Virginia) to vote (unanimous consent, nobody actually voted. Warner chose not to object to his own motion) to extend the Patriot Act for 6 weeks as the House wanted instead of the Senate's 6 months.

Good job Senators. Glad you're working so hard. Why exactly do we have this second body?

Why exactly do we have this second body?

See A Great Compromise

"Over the Fourth of July holiday, delegates worked out a compromise plan that sidetracked Franklin’s proposal.  On July 16, the convention adopted the Great Compromise by a heart-stopping margin of one vote.  As the 1987 celebrants duly noted, without that vote, there would likely have been no Constitution."

I hope you know I was being sarcastic. I approve of bicameral legislatures. I just want them to work. If I was in the Senate, I would have travelled back there and objected to the unanimous consent and had them call the role. Then, lo and behold, it would have been discovered that there was the absence of a quorum (as if just looking around the room wouldn't have sufficed).

The House just gave themselves another month off. I suppose we have to pay them for this.

Yep, most anything I say about the senate is sarcastic. It's hard to say which is worse, the senate being able to set their own rules, no term limits on 6-year terms, or the despicable pathetic current crop of senators which excerbates the problems in the first place.

I would hope we can expect a strong statement from Frist about the Dems breaking their promise to vote on Alito...and Frist should announce formally that recess has been cancelled...and Reid will go beserk...BTW..Reid and Pelosi hold a pesser this afternoon to talk about reform..I'll do a live thread if I don't lose power..

(snip)
The hold over in the judiciary committee is apparently not an OFFICIAL holdover, leaving open the possibility that when the committee meets again on the 24th, there will be yet another week’s delay in the vote.

I sure hope not

Spector needs to get their agreement in writing

Because I can see the Dems saying again that Leaky didn't speak for them
