Handgun sales booming, dealer says

Last Updated Dec 29 2005 08:12 AM CST CBC News

Liberal Leader Paul Martin may have inadvertently become the best salesperson around for gun dealers in Saskatchewan.

Earlier this month, Martin announced a $650-million law-and-order plan that would put new restrictions on handgun owners. Some collectors might be required to disable their handguns or surrender them to police.

Under the plan, only law enforcement officers and a small number of target shooters would be able to own handguns.

Now, some gun store owners in Saskatchewan say Martin's announcement has boosted business. One theory is that people think if they buy handguns now, they won't be subject to the new rules.

Darryl Schemenauer, who owns TNT Gunworks in Regina, says the sale of handguns is soaring.

"Not only us, but handgun sales have gone up, we heard, in some areas, 300 per cent," he said. "The thinking is, it's going to be very hard for government to come to your house and actually take that handgun away."

Schemenauer doesn't know exactly how many handguns he's sold since Martin's announcement, but he's confident sales have hit a record high for his store.

He predicts the trend will continue until a ban goes into effect or the Liberals lose the upcoming election.

Under the existing law, handguns are restricted weapons. That means in order to have one, people need a firearms licence that is valid for restricted firearms.

Also required is a registration certificate and, for those who need to move their guns from one location to another, an authorization to transport. As well, there are regulations for the storage, display and transportation of handguns.

"The thinking is, it's going to be very hard for government to come to your house and actually take that handgun away."

That depends on how big and powerful the sheeple let the gov't be.

And it may be Paul Pinko Martin's undoing. Hopefully

BTW, did any of you see Mailcall tonight? Gunnie Ermey was at the Knob Creek full auto shoot. AWESOME videography of the night shoot segment.

It sounds to me like a fairly large number of Canadians do not want gun control.

But I am sure this possibility will never occur to the Canadian government.

Probably also depends to some extent, where you live. Out here in the country, there just isn't enough law enforcement to go around and round up all the guns people possess. If citizens got word of it, I sure wouldn't want to be on the collecting end of it. The cops might be *collecting* more than they bargined for. And this is in NYS.

Sales of large diameter threaded plastic pipe sales will soar too.

Not to mention drywall and plaster and other items. Guy at a hardware store told me that sales of "renovating supplies" shot way up, out of phase with the usual season for DIY/building stuff, whenever a new round of gun control legislation was enacted.

Like the inside solution better. My wife is Canadian and when her brother visits, he loves to go room to room on an "Easter Egg" hunt (his term).

Always brings a tear to his eye.

Personally at this point I think they would be better off buying .308 semi-autos. That is the proper response to handgun bans. OK a good handgun is great to have. But a decent rifle is just way more important in the grand scheme of things.

I believe it's about 18", but it's been a while since I checked for sure.

At 18", that could work as a nice house gun.

You better stay at 18.25". This isn't a joke, the feds get very inventive when a shotgun barrel is very close to 18". That is what started the Ruby Ridge incident. It seems that the feds had a shorter measuring tape than normal people do.

Just as Klinton tripled sales of "Assault Weapons" in the U.S., the Canadian liberal loonies are a temporary boon to Canada's gun dealers.

But I wonder if the Canadians will ever get a smidgen of their rights back, or will be able to force a "sunset provision" of their own?

Sure could. But give the liberals a couple of more terms in power and they'll be coming after those too. Their goal is no guns of any kind in the hands of anyone but the police, the military, and the politically well connected. Sort of like the old USSR or Nazi Germany.

Come to think of it, that's exactly like the USSR and Nazi Germany.

Martin needs to be run out of town on a rail. The man is insane. All liberals are insane, of course.
