Baxley running for governor Thursday, January 05, 2006 By BILL BARROW Capital Bureau MONTGOMERY -- Pointing to her rural upbringing, Christian faith, life as a single parent and nearly four decades as a public employee, businesswoman and elected official, Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley on Wednesday announced her bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
"This state is made up of everyday people whose families work hard to provide the necessities of life, who try to afford health care and who try to protect their children from the evils of society," Baxley told about 300 campaign workers and supporters gathered in a downtown reception hall blocks from the Alabama Capitol. "Those are the people I am running for."
She continued, "I know personally the stakes and struggles of everyday life, and I know that as governor, I can do better than what we have seen from that office."
Her announcement, complete with gospel music, a minister's invocation, a balloon drop and other pageantry modeled after presidential nominating conventions, comes months after Baxley first confirmed that she planned to seek the job.

I'm in the Wiregrass and have been shocked to see several I Love Lucy bumper stickers around lately. I'll have to chase those folks down and explain a few things about democrats to them.
She sounds just like Hillary!
She's not like Hillary. She's been the Lt. Gov.and may still be. Not sure. I knew Lucy and her then husband Bill Baxley. We worked on his gubinatorial campaign (last time I voted D) back in the late 70s. Lucy is a very sweet, but tough lady. She was never condescending. She's a steel magnolia. I wish she would have switched party. I wish her well, but doubt she can beat Riley. Ala. is not George Wallace's Ala. any more.
I personally would hate to see any of them in public office tho.
She can't beat Riley, no, but she can beat Moore, and that's why it is so vital that Riley gets renominated.
She meshes pretty well with Republican ideals, moreso than some of the Republicans who run the state legislature. She used to live in Vestavia Hills, a very, very Republican city. PLus she's just plain likeable. My wife used to work for her in Montgomery and says that she's ambitious, but well grounded.
I'd rather she be Governor of Alabama than that idiotic Roy Moore. First she needs to promis not to raise taxes, and let's hope she can convince so many of the nuts in the state that a lottery would be great for the educational system.
Don't sell her short. In her race for LG in 2002, she got more votes than either Riley or Siegelman did for Governor. Whoever the GOP nominates will have to take her seriously.
Unless she is totally different from her husband which I guess is possible, she would be a catastrophe for Alabama.
Well, the Roy Moore issue is nothing you need to worry about, because with the addition of the Smith broad to the election, we're guaranteed a runoff in the Republican primary, and in a runoff, Riley will cream Moore.
As for Lucy Baxley, she may be a nice person, she may have a heart of gold, and all that nonsense, but all I know is, I'm from Mobile, I'm Catholic, and I'll never forget what happened in 1986, and even though a wife should stand by her husband, the fact is, she stood by while he stole that election from the rightful winner.
If the GOP nominates Roy Moore, it's a lost cause, and you know it's a lost cause because if given a choice between Moore and Baxley, I'm either voting for that independent candidate or I'm not voting at all.
The GOP's chances for victory in the fall are reliant on getting the right gubernatorial nominee, and by right gubernatorial nominee I mean Robert Riley. If Lucy Baxley faces Moore, then you are going to see Mathis pick up more votes than he should have because he'll have a disaffected area he can play too, because neither the name Roy Moore or anything associated with a Baxley plays well on the coast. And given that Mathis's casino gambling platform is a perfect fit for the most Republican major newspaper in the state, and you can clearly see that he'd have an outside shot.
Roy Moore as nominee would be poison to the party for years to come, and all that can be done must be done to stop this evil man.
Riley cut his political cvareer short when he got in bed with Paul Hubbert and the AEA...No way he'll be re-elected.
Ok then, explain to me how Riley loses. Explain to me how it is that Riley will lose to Baxley, who btw, is the AEA candidate in this race.
I would be interested to know why you dislike R. Moore.

Either Roy Moore or State Sen. Harri Anne Smith, anyone but Riley should get the GOP nod, period.
Lucy Baxley would just be another Kathleen Blanco. Alabama doesn't need that fiasco.
Harri Anne Smith is nothing more than the foil candidate that I have long predicted, pro-business but anti-plan for progress. Her entry into the race guarantees a runoff, and just makes the runoff at the end of June that much more of a high-stakes contest.
Sounds like her campaign scored a good photo opportunity.
