Free the Barrett Report
American Spectator ^ | 5 Jan 06

By R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

WASHINGTON -- In a very clever year-end column, the venerable William Safire writing in the New York Times asks whether "special prosecutor David Barrett's 400-page expose of political influence within the Internal Revenue Service and the Clinton Justice Department" will be the government report "most likely to resist investigative reporting" this year. I certainly hope not. The misuse of the IRS and Justice Department has a long record going back to Richard Nixon and Watergate and before that to Franklin Roosevelt and his harassment of former Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon and publisher Moses Annenberg. Wealthy individuals such as Mellon and Annenberg can protect themselves -- though Annenberg was cruelly sent to jail. Ordinary citizens cannot, and the way the IRS is set up today not much provocation is necessary to instigate a costly investigation...costly to ordinary taxpayers.

I would love to see the IRS get taken to the bank, instead of taking FROM the bank.

No, we never will.

It's the rest of the public I'm concerned about.

Just imagine if Bush had done this. The uproar would be unbelievable!

Democrats and a couple of incompetent Republicans have seen to it that the report is gutted.

There is no way that I am buying the line put forth by every Republican that comments on this that Kit Bond and Knollenberger are just innocent dupes or incompetents. I might buy they were blackmailed to sell out, but I suspect they are just as dirty as any Democrat and are either being paid off to participate or they have done something comparable. You know...you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. This pair and a lot more Republicans like Lott who sold us out on impeachment are no better than the crooked Democrats. The Republicans need to know that some of us are no longer willing or able to buy that they are the "stupid" party and incapable of learning how to govern, stand up to the other party, etc. They are just as "evil" as the Democrats IMO.

A Taxreform bump for you all.

If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.

The misuse of the IRS and Justice Department has a long record going back to Richard Nixon and Watergate and before that to Franklin Roosevelt and his harassment of former Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon and publisher Moses Annenberg.

Indeed, and one of many reasons it is time to end the impositions of federal taxes on incomes and payrolls. Half measures and merely trimming at the edges don't hack it.

Federalist #21:

"It is a signal advantage of taxes on articles of consumption that they contain in their own nature a security against excess.

They prescribe their own limit, which cannot be exceeded without defeating the end proposed - that is, an extension of the revenue."

When applied to this object, the saying is as just as it is witty that, "in political arithmetic, two and two do not always make four."

If duties are too high, they lessen the consumption; the collection is eluded; and the product to the treasury is not so great as when they are confined within proper and moderate bounds.

This forms a complete barrier against any material oppression of the citizens by taxes of this class, and is itself a natural limitation of the power of imposing them.

Impositions of this kind usually fall under the denomination of indirect
taxes
, and must for a long time constitute the chief part of the revenue
raised in this country. . Those of the direct kind, which principally relate to land and buildings, may admit of a rule of apportionment." (Emphasis added).

John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.

H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.

---and unless some Republidum Senators develop some backbone, it won't---

Exerpt from Schippers' 'Sellout':

Finally Senator Lott and Republican Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania entered and sat at the head of a big rectangular table.

Lott leaned back in his chair with a power lean that said, "I'm in charge." I'll never forget the very first words out of his mouth: "Henry, you're not going to dump this garbage on us."

"Huh?" came the bewildered reply from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry Hyde, Republican of Illinois.

"You're not going to dump this garbage on us."

Don't count on it.

Time to give them a backbone transplant. I'm working on a letter now that I will fax later this evening. I will be near my Reps office tomorrow...and I might pop in for added impact. Call is DC too.

Grassley, as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, is the man we need to influence here......and I've got a letter in the hopper to him as well.....and it will be a scorcher.

And put us in prison if we don't fill out the forms just right or if we overlook something. Talk about government control>

I can see why Marx recommended the income tax as a step toward Communism. It accomplishes about the same thing with reward, punishment, and control.
