Our Latin Conundrum
Washington Post ^ | January 2, 2006 | Jackson Diehl

Posted on 01/05/2006 10:37:37 AM PST by Sleeping Beauty

Here's a sad but safe new year's prediction: U.S. relations with Latin America, which plunged to their lowest point in decades in 2005, will get still worse in 2006.

The year ended with a string of reverses. In a regional summit in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in November, President Bush was jeered by demonstrators and taunted by Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, who aspires to make Latin America anti-American and anti-democratic.

Then came the Chavez-backed victory in Bolivia of Evo Morales, a former llama herder and coca farmer who describes himself as Washington's "nightmare."

Morales's victory sets the stage for a year in which leftist populists will be competing for power in elections across the region, including in Peru, Nicaragua and Mexico.

By the end of this year a Morales imitator could be president of Peru, Daniel Ortega and his Sandinista movement could once again control Nicaragua, and Mexico could be led by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a socialist who has never visited the United States.

It looks more and more like Mexico is headed the way of the rest of Latin America -- to the extreme left. In its June presidential election, Mexico may go socialist, with communist overtones.

We import far more oil from Mexico (our newly communist-leaning neighbor) than we do Saudi Arabia. Things are getting bad along the border. What do you think the U.S. should do, if anything?

If Mexico goes communist our border problem is solved. Communist countries bordering free countries build walls to keep their subjects in.

Of course, Mexico wouldn't do it because they need the billions that illegal aliens send back to their home country.

They will still need to sell their oil at world market prices.

I don't see how oil becomes a weapon for them, though a Communist Mexico would certainly pose a lot of challenges for us.

While I realize there are many, many good and hard-working people in nations like Mexico, it worries me to a large degree that we seem to be importing their population. It seems inevitable that we will import their problems as well.

"It looks more and more like Mexico is headed the way of the rest of Latin America -- to the extreme left. In its June presidential election, Mexico may go socialist, with communist overtones."

Then we'll have no excuse to no built the tallest wall on the planet along that border and to put armed guards all along it. This could end up being a positive development. It might finally wake up Bush and the Republicans to the fact that Mexico is a hostile nation and that we must seal the border once and for all. If this socialist dope takes over there, it will be all the more imperative to build that wall ASAP because when Mexico's economy gets even more wrecked by Marxism, the flow across the border from Mexico will turn into a tidal wave.

They are just going to join the movement of Latin America, and the Socialist Democrats here in the USA. Nothing really different. Same agendas. Take money from one group and give it to their voting block. They know there are more that love to sit on their asses and get free stuff, than people who actually work their asses off and EARN the money. So, they all buy their votes. The entire bunch's goal is a TOTAL SOCIALISTIC GOVERNMENT OF THE WORLD. And, as long as the population of dead beats and sit-on-their-asses grows larger and larger, the socialist will win.

Mexico is one of the few countries where Communism would be an improvement. At least that way they would shoot their own citizens who tried to escape to the free world, sparing us the trouble.

Communists of the past have been pretty good about building walls to keep their subjects inside. Maybe Mexico will build our border wall for us ... and shoot people who try to escape Mexico.

Mexico has always been communist to some considerable degree from back before the October, 1917 Revolution in Russia.

Mexico still has private farms but they have confiscated some estates in the past. Ever buy gasoline in Mexico? Bet you filled up with Pemex, the government's monopoly. Ever notice how El Salvador's FMLN terrorist leadership were lovingly embraced in Mexico. Over the decades the hammer and cicle was much in evidence during the ruling "Revolutionary Party's" large rallies.

Mexico has been communist in all but open declaration for 70 years.

In the 70s I was stuck in La Paz coming back from marlin fishing at the cape and couldn't get a flight back because the PRI was having their national convention there and had comandeered all flights.

The 2 days I was stuck there their delegates were running all over town waving their red flags and Mao's little red book and shouting communist slogans.

I think you're right. If Mexico moves politically, it will be by way of communism. The wealthy don't want to deal with the poor, and that's why we have a problem with illegals: they get a better chance here than at home.

The cartels have only to take the wealthy by force and help themselves to the wealth. Actually, the government has very often done that by way of taking wealthy landowners' holdings...sort of like or eminent domain.

Greed is so ugly.

Communism feeds on poor people, they are waived injustice proof pinned onto foreign firms that pilfer the wealth from the "natives".

The industries are nationalized, the peasants get $ 40.00 a head as a show of future benefits of nationalization and direct ownership.

By the time populace realize that the incompetent leadership has destroyed the infrastructure that provided the initial wealth. The jig is up, and its to late then the warlords show up to fight over the scrap.

In the very end, there are live aid shows that confront the evils of capitalism because they let the communist destroyed country starve.

Rinse repeat any point on globe.

Do you really still think the Russians are gonna nuke us? The nukes used in the movie were Russian, and the soviets led the proxy armies.

I really don't see the Cubans leading an assault with Latin American armies.

That being said, I still watch the movie when it comes on.

I've always maintained the US was worried Mexico would go Communist. It's one of the primary reasons we have never closed off the border. As long as the would revolutionaries were allowed to leave they would not stay to fight.

One thing is for sure. If Mexico was a Communist state. There would be no debate about a Israel type wall.

This won't happen. Since Mexico gains more from remittances their citizens send back from the US than they make from their tourism industry, they are not going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. They will however probably invite the US Banking industry representatives, and other businesses working in Mexico, to join the communist party there, in order to do business with them.

Communists are embracing the "free traders" these days, doncha know. "Free traders" are enabling them to gather power, and it is enriching the party leaders with wealth they never imagined.

How soon will America fall after that? When our business leaders join the communist parties of various countries, as they have been invited to do in China, how long can America stand as a free nation?
