Microsoft downplays Google threat

Bill Gates has played down the threat posed to Microsoft by competition from internet search giant Google. Google's meteoric rise and rivalry with Microsoft has increasingly become a fixation of the press, Mr Gates said.

"People tend to get over focused on one of our competitors. We've always seen that," the Microsoft chairman said.

Speaking before a keynote speech at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, Mr Gates said computer giant IBM posed a greater threat to Microsoft.

"IBM has always been our biggest competitor. The press just don't like to write about IBM," he told the Reuters news agency.

"The biggest company in the computer industry by far is IBM. They have four times the employees I have, way more revenues than I have," he added.

'Honeymoon period'

Google has been branching out from its core web search services and many of its recent e-mail and e-commerce offerings pose a challenge to Microsoft.

The company has seen its stock price soar since its initial public offering in August 2004, while Microsoft's has remained stagnant.

A legal tussle last year over Google's appointment of a former senior Microsoft executive in China stoked media interest in the rivalry between the two firms.

Google also recently announced a $1bn investment deal with America Online - a move which effectively shut out a rumoured rival deal between Microsoft and AOL.

But Mr Gates predicted press fascination with Google would change with time.

"They (Google) are in their honeymoon period and anything they announce gets hype," he told the Associated Press agency.

"They will obviously branch out beyond internet search, but I think the expectations won't live up to reality."

I think it's great that the United States argues about which of its many groundbreaking tech companies is the best, while the Arab world fights to see who can extinguish the latest modern advances like indoor plumbing first, and needs to rely on its evil book to see which hand to use to wipe its ass.

Our rivalries are great - pass the popcorn!

Somebody should remind Billy boy that IBM made him rich. If it was not for IBM MSDOS would never have become a reality. After all he and his buddy simply stole code from other OPS designed to run on those early Microprocessors such as Intel 8080's etc.., I used two fully functional DOS systems before Microsoft came into existence. Billy just pilfered code, and IBM bought into it.

If it were not for Bill & Co, IBM also wouldn't be what it is today...they work hand-in-hand, in many cases.

Really? I'd be curious to know why...by almost all standards, they are simply the best search engine company.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't google just steal data from altavista and repackage it? I seem to remember reading about google's methodology back when it started.

No; here's a fascinating history of Google; after reading this, you'll understand why they wouldn't be interesting in AltaVista's inferior search results anyway.

Thanks. That was a good read. I remember reading, back around 1997-1998, that they would search AltaVista and then feed the results into their own softare.
