Florida Court Strikes Down School Vouchers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Jan. 6) - The Florida Supreme Court struck down a statewide voucher system Thursday that allowed children to attend private schools at taxpayer expense - a program Gov. Jeb Bush considered one of his proudest achievements.

It was the nation's first statewide voucher program.

In a 5-2 ruling, the high court said the program undermines the public schools and violates the Florida Constitution's requirement of a uniform system of free public education.

Voucher opponents had also argued that the program violated the separation of church and state in giving tax dollars to parochial schools - an argument a lower court agreed with. But the state Supreme Court did not address that issue.

About 700 children are attending private or parochial schools through the program. But the ruling will not become effective until the end of the school year.

"I think it is a sad day for accountability in our state," Bush said. He said the voucher program had a positive effect because it "put pressure on school districts to focus on the underperforming schools."

This would have to be the same Flori-duh Supremes that tried and tried to change the results of the national presidential election in '00, by just wanting recounts in counties of their choosing.

What a bunch of slimy d*uchebags.

This has nothing to do with the Constitution of Florida, it is politics. The democrats must keep people dumb and poor so that they can buy their votes with government money. Those judges on the Florida Supreme Court who voted to take away the opportunity for these children to gain a education and improve their lives are following the agenda of the democrat party. Keep them dumb, uneducated and out of work so we can buy their votes.

It's the only way liberals can keep blacks dumbed down in sub-par schools. Prevent them from making a better choice.

In a way this is a good thing. See, the next step after the government gives you 'their' money to have you choose a school, is for them to start regulating the schools that are receiving 'their' money via the voucher program. It would be best to not even give the government that money in the first place and spend it on the school of your choice. This way the governments ability to be involved in your kids education is reduced since there is no financial 'open door' to step through.
We homeschool, and I would not take a voucher from the government to help pay for the materials. As soon as I do then the Feds can tell what materials I am 'required' to use.
Now a tax credit is something completely different.

The Florida Supreme Court struck down a voucher system that allowed some children to attend private schools at taxpayer expense, saying Thursday that it violates the state constitution's requirement of a uniform system of free public schools. The 5-2 opinion struck down the Opportunity Scholarship Program, championed by Gov. Jeb Bush, which was the nation's first statewide system of school vouchers. Under the 1999 law, students at public schools that earn a failing grade from the state in two out of four years were eligible for vouchers to attend private schools. Judges had allowed the state to continue the program...

The history of public education in the United States has been one dependent on local, not state or national, funding. I believe the first public school opened in New York City around 1820 and was funded by public spirited citizens. And so it was in America in the 19th century. Today, tragically, we have every court in the land involved in "public" education, and most feel a badly diseased system needs saving. However, if you could check you would find that probably only one in ten judges (like one in ten in Congress) send their kids to public schools.
