Did anyone else hear this on the Michael Medved talk radio today?
A man called in, near the end of the hour. He said he had been taken his kids to the theater, and the kids movie they were waiting to see had a very long line. Brokeback Mountain was also showing at that theater. He said he sat near the ticket booth for 35 minutes, as his kids waited in line to buy tickets for their movie.
During that 35 minutes he never heard one person buy a ticket for Brokeback Mountain. However, during that 35 minutes, the SOLD OUT sign came on for Brokeback. Out of curiosity, he went in to the Brokeback theater, and only saw 4 people in there. The theater manager refused to comment when the man questioned him.
Is this how all those theaters are getting such high attendance for Brokeback? Imaginary theater goers?
Perhaps other theater goers can investigate for themselves this weekend.
I can only vouch for the fact that this man called in a related the story as I presented it here, not if its true. Callers can make up stories too. It peaked my interest though.
Gives new meaning to the term "cowpoke."
I'll bet you it's got to gross $30 million to make any money; partciularly if they're advertising it heavily. But what do I know about the movie business? Nothing.
I'd recommend it.
Why?
I wouldn't want to see what was going on in that theatre.
My observations would have been relatively mundane - what is very clear to me is the economic growth that is going on in the United States. The American economy is booming. The obvious sign of this boom may come as a surprise - traffic. Even in the suburbs I was visiting, the traffic, particularly to and from shopping centres was horrific. It did not matter if it was a weekday or weekend, but the amount of people out on the roads with their cars going shopping had increased visibly since the last time I'd been there.
This indicates confidence, this indicates money to spend, this indicates economic activity near to bursting at the seams.

You are a bit green here to be posting rules. Be quiet.
Surfed many a day listening to Dale...
Homo, Homo on the Range
Where the queers and the other dopes play
They watch their sheep herds
And behave just like Nerds
And the gerbils have all run a-waaaaayyyy!!!!!!!
Because it showed how he straightened himself out. IMO it could have been better if they highlighted more of what he did after he straightened himself out. It showed how coming from nothing you could make something of yourself and overcome drinking and drugs.
I can back you up on this one, because I'm in the book buying/selling business.
I've NEVER seen the resale value of a book drop as quickly as did both Bill & Hillary's "re-writing of history" flops.
I wouldn't doubt that box office receipts are manipulated in the same manner that book sales can be.
I don't understand why some people insist on talking down the success of this movie. It IS a success as a small budget movie, released in a limited number of theaters, as many such movies are.
But when you mention this, most people say you are supporting the movie. I guess if I point out that HRC is the senator from New York I'm supporting her candidacy.
Flaming Saddles
I don't know what kind of ad budget it has, and good luck finding that--it's complicated, and they don't generally publish the info readily.
They probably had 15 mil in Handiwipes overhead alone.
Go to Boxofficemojo.com.......it lists each movie with daily running totals....BBM doesnt even rate as a mole on the balls of a mouse. The big story (Scam) is actually that the movie has "grossed" less than 20 million dollars..thats dollars not people...People are not seeing the movie despite proclaimation of it being a "Cultural Phenom"!
It is a campaign where the studio buys up all the tickets for the performance online....selling out the theatre. Then next week they can report the highest gross per theatre numbers in the trades.
Miramax was very good at doing this.
Brokeback Mountain threads: Mommy please make it stop.
Also, it's nothing like the ad budget for Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, which is one of the largest ever. But since we like that movie it doesn't matter. ;)
Registered in 2004. That's green?
I know that is a favorite meme around here. But one of them is a rodeo cowboy. Bull rider, even. Do with that what you will.
That thought occurred to me as well. And someone knowledgable about the movie industry commented on one of those threads that this is sometimes done because of some financial incentive to the theater owner. It's better to show high attendance on certain movies than others, apparently.
So, I suppose, if the Brokeback Mountain distributor is giving a bigger cut to the theater owner (most theaters are owned by huge companies), they may be putting Brokeback Mountain tickets in the slots for other films like Narnia. This cheats the Narnia distributor and benefits the Brokeback Mountain guys. But they can't risk getting caught by selling more tickets than they have seats, so they put up a sold sign when they run out of tickets.
I don't know anything about the business. I am just basing this on comments on a thread about The Passion of the Christ.
Maybe that is the rated capacity for the movie.. homos in dark places may want privacy.
Seriously, though.. anything you heard "some guy on talk-radio" say has to be taken with a grain of salt.
Also, most of the rank and file in my local were good solid conservatives.
It should be noted that Medved liked the movie.
Can't be. Just thought it was dang rude.
You do know how to use your mouse? Like not click?
Yup
The thread title still shows up on the new posts page.
Oh no! I was referring to Walk the Line!!
I'm just not interested in seeing it, but I love the works of screenwriter Larry McMurtry. The director Ang Lee is really uneven. But I don't like the actors or the subject matter so I won't be seeing it. This has been a rotten movie year for me, and I've gone to the theater rarely, my lowest movie attendance since I started going to movies.
Re#74 Thanks for the expansion on what may be going on. What I would love to see is some investigative reporting where somebody interviews surprised moviegoers that were misled into thinking they were simply seeing a Western. That would be a hoot...
Don't speak to me that way, and don't tell me what to do.
It's interesting--people here LOVED Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, yet how many threads have been posted on that, as compared to this movie no one here has seen and no one is interested in?
Maybe we need a FRTeeper Movies thread regularly to discuss movies we, you know, LIKE and have seen?
Very limited release. They are tightly controlling the release. It will make some money -- but it is at the end of its run (both puns intended).
Its target audience have all gone to see it, they will keep it limited to gay-friendly areas. It will probably end up in the $25MM area.
It was made to win awards, not make money. But the money people in Hollwood won't forget this. It will be interesting to see if Lee's career tanks some after this vanity piece.
Speaking of the Oscars..the movies they're touting for Oscar Consideration are so out there that i truly doubt many people are going to tune in. It'll be interesting.
What a strange post.
If you have a problem with a new thread, take it to the mods.
I thought Ice Storm was less suffocating than Ordinary People and that kind of junk, with terrific acting.

I say let the homos have the oscars and golden boner awards, then hollywood will loose even more $$$.
Boxofficemojo.com says it's up to $16.7M through Thursday. The budget was $14M. It's going to make a fair bit of money, even though most people will never see it.
I dare say Narnia would generate its own interest merely because of the book it is derived from.
Another observation from American television news - the amount of discussion on the news about Narnia was nil or negligible. Discussion of Brokeback Mountain was almost continuous.
Regards, Ivan
Sounds like a good idea.
OK, if you can point out a thread with a similar topic about this movie I promise not to post again for 6 months.
The topic of this thread, in case you didn't notice, was the possiblility of fraud occuring by theaters creating imaginary movie goers to Brokeback.
Actually, My Li(f)e was Clintoon's book. Living HIStory* was her royal THIGHNESSES.
*HIStory as in His Story as in cleaning up from bimbo erruptions, faking suicides for murdered aides who knew too much, and many a night with the "girls", Rosie O'Donut, Elaine DeGenerate, etc.
