CIA director Porter Goss is redoubling efforts to prevent agents from divulging the spy agency's secrets to the media, and also plans to clamp down on former spies publishing books about their covert careers, Time magazine has reported.
Citing an anonymous former senior Central Intelligence Agency official, Time, in a report to hit newsstands this week, said on its website that CIA officials told employees during a meeting last week that leaking had gotten out of control and needed to stop.
The reported added that a new clampdown on leakers had been launched, supported by a team of "mostly retired" agents contracted to scan the news media for possible leaks of classified material and to try to find the leakers responsible.
The internal crackdown follows recent media reports about the CIA's secret prison network for terror suspects and last month's disclosure in The New York Times that US President George W Bush authorised the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on the telephone calls of some Americans without court warrants.
The report said Goss also is worried about the potential impact of the leaks and insider books on the agency's security and clandestine operations.
"You don't want people who sit down with an (intelligence) officer in confidence to be concerned it will end up in the guy's memoirs in a year or two," one anonymous intelligence official told Time.
Isn't that the old saying?
Take a few of them out, tie them to a rostrum, and shoot them. That should provide an attitude adjustment for these Lefties.
I have a real problem with "former" CIA employees who write a "book" revealing national secrets as soon as they are no longer employed by the CIA. To me, it appears as though they are selling out their country for a quick buck and fifteen minutes of fame. I also have to challenge their faithfulness and loyalty to the United States of America. I'm not buying the DemocRATS' "whistleblower" crap.
When I hear that people are fired or charged for media leaks then and only then will I think anything productive is happening.
Now THAT's the most sensible comment I've seen posted. Now isn't the fact that knowledge of the leak about the crackdown on leakers was itself based on a leak?
...they've asked Joe Wilson to look for them?
Far as I'm concerned they start leaking secrets the should wind up with their photo on a milk carton.
Why do the Dim Wing Nuts squeal so much about Bush recording the phone calls of Americans? Simple, Bush is listening to telephone conversations of Clinton-appointed Civil Servqants who are leaking items to the press to try and prevent Presidential policies from being implimented. For some reason the Dims hate that! Most of America loves it!
Treason and sedition
Look, the reality is that Goss has been cleaning out the CIA and targeting leakers. So has Condi at State. Rummy at DOD. Rummy is HATED over there because he's been so effective at doing so. Notice most of our leakers are coming from CIA and State lately and consider Goss/Condi have only been in control about a year. Rummy's had five years to make some headway. If Condi/Goss weren't having some effect we wouldn't be seeing so many leaks aimed at sabotaging their efforts. The problem is that we have a number of snakes and it takes awhile to cut off all their heads.
Still, I'm glad to here they are going to tighten down even further in pursuit and hopefully punishment. Without which it would be meaningless.
It is LEAKED to Time that Porter Goss is cracking down on leakers???
Sounds like it isn't working very well.
The question is .. what are they gonna do to the leakers when caught??
The politicians and their attitudes probably contribute to the notion among agents that it is "O.K." to leak. The American public gets left out of the equation all together.
Cute! Glad I didn't turn my computer off, lol.
A LEAK about the LEAKS.........only in America!
LOL, I thought you were sound asleep by now!
