Former President Clinton makes surprise visit to Bangor

BANGOR, Maine --Former President Bill Clinton surprised U.S. troops arriving from Iraq when a refueling stop at the Bangor International Airport coincided with the arrival of two chartered flights carrying soldiers.

Clinton was returning Monday night from Paris where he had met with French President Jacques Chirac to discuss plans for his charitable organization, the Clinton Foundation.

(snip)

"Thank you for your service," Clinton said as he shook hands and hugged many of the soldiers as they passed by. He autographed hats, cards, paper and other items.

The soldiers, about 600 of them, were returning to bases in Oklahoma, Texas and Georgia. Their two chartered aircraft had landed for fuel.

"This is great," said Staff Sgt. Anthony Thompson of New York City, who stood next to Clinton.

(snip)

Clinton had some fun when Army Spc. Joshua Ruschenberg used a cell phone provided by troop greeters to call to his sister-in-law, Shancy Garrison in North Carolina, and handed over the phone to the former commander in chief.

"Hi, Shancy, it's Bill Clinton," the former president said into the phone.

There is a very nice group of people that go out of their way to greet every "troop ship" that lands at Bangor. They do not do it for the photo op. One very nice lady is in her nineties, drives herself in all weather. She served during WWII.

Hey everyone, it's pronounced Bangore, not Banger. We locals get a little sensitive when it is constantly mispronounced. :)

What, Clinton didn't want to hold up the entire airport so he could get another haircut? Times a changing.

Fact: Did you know it's 299 miles between Cumming, GA and Climax, GA?

But oddly, to get there, you don't have to go through Clito, GA.

Hmmm, title to article makes it sound like Clinton made that trip especially to welcome the troops. When in reality, it was a forunate (or unforunate for the troops) coincidence. Also, notice that there were no pictures (haven't seen any on other posts for this) and very few quotes from those that Clinton met? Odd, huh? Considering, everytime President Bush meets the troops, they're knocking themselves over to shake his hand.

France ?? Klinton !! Oh I see he is just starting his Bag-Man job for hilidabeast

Actually, he probably went to France to discuss his campaign plan for becoming UN Secretary General.

Bill Clinton Takes Spot On Global Stage

How is the Secretary-General appointed?

The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly, on the recommendation of the Security Council. The Secretary-General's selection is therefore subject to the veto of any of the five permanent members of the Security Council.

Mr. Kofi Annan, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, took office on 1 January 1997. His predecessors were:

Boutros Boutros-Ghali (Egypt), who held office from January 1992 to December 1996;
Javier Pérez de Cuéllar (Peru), who served from January 1982 to December 1991;
Kurt Waldheim (Austria), who held office from January 1972 to December 1981;
U Thant (Burma, now Myanmar), who served from November 1961, when he was appointed acting Secretary-General (he was formally appointed Secretary-General in November 1962) to December 1971;
Dag Hammarskjöld (Sweden), who served from April 1953 until his death in a plane crash in Africa in September 1961; and Trygve Lie (Norway), who held office from February 1946 to his resignation in November 1952.

Although there is technically no limit to number of five-year terms a Secretary-General may serve, none so far has held office for more than two terms.
