WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, AARP issued the following statement in response to remarks made by Harry Belafonte.

"Last year, AARP The Magazine recognized Harry Belafonte for his work in serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 1987.

"To our dismay, Mr. Belafonte has made reckless and irresponsible statements about the President of the United States which we neither support nor condone. Mr. Belafonte is entitled to express his own personal views, but AARP does not condone the manner and tone which he has chosen and finds his comments completely unacceptable."

They don't support or condone Belafonte's comments or the President?

The comments because the word "which" was used instead of "who."

If the dependent clause referred to the President, it would have said "whom" instead of "which".

Referring to the President would be "whom we don't support".

Their statement was fine.

That was well after his foul remarks about Colin Powell and Condi Rice.

It's not redundant. Condone implies overlooking without protest. The AARP obviously disagrees with what Belafonte said, and that's what their statement is about.

To be fair, it might refer to "the United States".

I belonged to AARP prior to the Hillary Health Care debacle. When AARP came out and indorsed her proposal without even consulting their membership, I withdrew my membership via a scathing letter. I've not heard from them since and haven't regretted it. I'm sure that I'm on a list that they maintain. It is probably that list that starts with an "s."

What amazes me about AARP is that they were able to get such a large group of leftists together under one roof.

I think that if they'd meant they did not support or condone the President, it would have said "WHOM we neither support nor condone."

AARP is just an insurance company. Why they think they speak for anyone is a mystery.

I understand that AARP is alarmed because of the people who are dropping their AARP membership because of their support and honoring of Harry B.

To our dismay, Mr. Belafonte has made reckless and irresponsible statements about the President of the United States that we neither condone, nor do we support. Mr. Belafonte is entitled to express his own personal views, but AARP does not approve of the manner and tone that he has chosen and finds his comments completely unacceptable.
There. How's that? Do I win? Wait, no fair I do this for a living.

this piece of work is nothing more than the worst kind of scum. Enjoying the riches and success that America has given him while he heaps scorn and vitriol upon the whole country to a leftist dictator. He oughta move there, but no. I love these people - big fat mouth and without any conviction about anything whatsoever...

What amazes me about AARP is that they were able to get such a large group of leftists together under one roof.

Most people I know who joined did so for discounts on travel.

They lost lots of respect when they supported the prescription drug fiasco. The AARP is actually into insurance and they stand to gain from being a provider.

They lost me before my 55th birthday when I got envelopes that announced on the outside that I would soon be 55 and could join.

(I've grown up...now, I divulge my age proudly....but I still do hate the AARP selling out retired people)

The second sentence, along with the use of "which" rather than "whom" in the first, pretty well clarifies the statement. That said, the first sentence would have been better worded as follows: To our dismay, Mr. Belafonte has made reckless and irresponsible statements, which we neither support nor condone, about the President of the United States.
