Sony Music has launched the first major music label dedicated to nurturing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender artists.
The label, Music with a Twist, is a joint venture with Wilderness Media & Entertainment, the company led by Matt Farber, who has founded MTV's new gay and lesbian channel LOGO.
"It's an idea whose time has come," Mr Farber said.
"Only now are media and entertainment brands being created for the gay and lesbian audience following the success of brands for other minorities," he said.
Mr Farber says the success of brands dedicated to the African American and Hispanic audiences has helped talent in those communities cross over well beyond their core audiences.
Music With a Twist's roster will feature gay artists who have mass appeal and hit potential across all musical genres.
The label also plans to release various compilations geared toward gay and bisexual audiences, featuring hit songs by established artists that have been embraced by gay, bisexual and transgender audiences, as well as tracks from emerging gay artists.
Don't think I'll be buying Sony anything for a while...
I think that worm Sony planted finally sprouted.
Music for the interlewd. :o)
Gay music ?
Is this for real??
This is a GREAT idea. It will keep all that gay music off the other labels....
The first CD release will be "Songs Inspired By Bareback Mountain", including the hits, "Homo On The Range," and "Bathhouses of Laredo."
Yeah, like the gays don't already have gay or gay-friendly artists like Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minelli, Bette Midler, Cher, the Village People, George Michael, Elton John...
I vote we get them their own water fountains, too!
Gives new meaning to "rootkit."
Ahem, Michael Jackson is the King of WHAT? Did Mottolo take him back? Is this an early April Fools Joke? Why do I have sudden gastro-economical surges?
Why are Liberals trying to segregate everyone?
Don't forget Judas Priest! I have all of their gay-era CDs (meaning, no Ripper).
Gangsta artists shoot each other
Country Artists may cuss at each other
Gay/Lesbian artists simply kick, pull hair and scratch each other's eyes out.
Just so "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" isn't on the playlist....
Wait until they find out their 10% market was off by a decimal point.
They seem to be using the alternative label ploy, so it won't be Sony, it will be Music With a Twist.
I don't know how well that will work. Disney tried it, and I think they have managed to tar themselves pretty well anyway.
Put this together with Sony's deliberate virus infection, and it doesn't make them look too great.
Sony has a lot at stake just now, because they are just releasing the first Blu-Ray players and discs, but Microsoft is coming out with an alternative HDTV version that permits streaming, and it's not clear that Sony will win the competition.
It seems as if top management is letting the "creative" types get out of control.
"Stand By Your Man"
This concept seems a bit redundant.
Perhaps Sony Classical will launch a straight Broadway affiliated label.
Brokeback Records ?
Wonderful! The world needs more happy music.
Don't forget the Nelson twins.
From a marketing standpoint, "Music with a Twist" is a bad idea. Is that really the name?
They should have called it "Twist" and left it at that.
Remember Rule 1!
"Music with a Limp Wrist"?
Huh. Looks like the Butthole Surfers found a new label.
I heard the remix is entitled "Stand Behind Your Man"
I have a suggestion for the label name: SUPER!
Yeah, butt we're a long way from a Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys reunion...
Maybe this is the chance for a Village People comeback...
"A lot of cool things happened because of it. I've had feedback from a lot of people, particularly teenagers who were going through tremendous hardships with family and at school. I know when I was 12 or 13 I was thinking, 'Oh God, I'm a freak, I'm gonna burn in hell,' and all that crap - and it's a horrible experience to live through if you don't have support. But looking at the bigger picture, I'm not the only metal homo. There are many more statistically speaking."
" I heard the remix is entitled "Stand Behind Your Man""
MTV sure has gone down hill since the days when I use to watch.
Come on, everybody-----"It's fun to listen to the - S - O - N - Y, It's fun to listen to the - S - O - N - Y"
Darn! Can't figure out how to make an "S" out of my arms.
For those of you not paying attention I said "make an "S"
The queers and fagots audience comprises, at most, 5% of the country, considerably less than the African Americans or Hispanics.
Accordingly, I get the idea that this new label will be less than sterling.
Sure gives new insight to "Victim of Changes" lyrics.
Bingo! I'll have to think up a suitable award for that one.....nice shot!
"tooling for anus" records
The Nelson twins? Ricky had a twin brother? No way.
So let's see...
A mainstream label that doesn't feature enough gay artists is guilty of discrimination, but a mainstream label that features ONLY gay artists is not?
Come on, now. There has to be another brand around...
