FYI

Evelyn Miller case

A 5-year-old girl with a smiling round face murdered in July dominated local and state headlines for half of 2005.

Evelyn Miller was reported missing by her mother Noel Miller early July 1. Miller, 22, said she returned home from working overnight at about 6:20 a.m. to find the door open and Evelyn missing. Her live-in fiance Casey Frederiksen and the couple’s two toddler sons were asleep inside the apartment.

More than 1,300 volunteers and personnel from various agencies across the state organized an intensive search which ended July 6 when Evelyn’s body was recovered from the Cedar River two miles from her home.

As authorities confirmed the young girl was murdered, the community shared the feelings of a family spokesperson who said, “Things like this aren’t supposed to happen.”

Details of Evelyn’s death have not been made public and no arrests have been made.

In the days following, authorities executed search warrants for the shared apartment and vehicles of two men who are the last known people to see Evelyn alive. Randy Patrie, 33, and Dan Slick, 26, said they stopped at Evelyn’s apartment at about 2 a.m. to see Frederiksen, but left Evelyn unharmed.

The two were not labeled suspects.

On Sept. 29, Frederiksen was arrested in New Hampton after a federal grand jury indicted him for possession of child pornography. Frederiksen pleaded not guilty to the charges, which allege he possessed more than 1,000 images of “violent and sadistic” sexual abuse of children on a computer hard drive.

The indictment was amended on Nov. 17 to include an additional count of possession of child pornography and 12 counts of receipt of child pornography. He is being held in Linn County Jail awaiting trial, tentatively scheduled for April.

According to Floyd County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer, the pornography charges are separate but related to the murder investigation.

Miller, Frederiksen’s family and the family of Evelyn’s father Andy Christie, 26, of Waterloo, said they feel Frederiksen was not involved in Evelyn’s murder.

Dettmer said the case continues to be active and ongoing.
