Hillary's presidential remake leaves the Clinton heartland cold

Although it is still more than two years before the main parties in the United States decide on their candidates for the 2008 presidential election, it is widely assumed that the Democratic Party candidate will be the junior senator from New York, Hillary Clinton.

You might expect the political conversation among Democrats to be along the lines of "is Hillary electable" (given the preponderance of red states on the American political map) but as I discovered during a recent visit to the US, many in her natural base have already washed their hands of her.

[snip] At a dinner party in New York last week with a group that included writers, lawyers, a former senior staff member for the Clinton administration and a columnist for The New York Times, the hatred of Hillary Clinton was unconcealed. It was articulated with the passion of people scorned. Clinton has not just disappointed, she has betrayed them. I might have been more surprised at the way these Upper West Side liberals were slagging off at someone many of them would once have seen as a political ally, if not a personal friend, had it not been for a pretty savage piece in that week's New York magazine.

[snip] A far bigger complaint is not about her personality, but her politics. In recent months, Clinton has cosied up to the leading members of the "vast right-wing conspiracy" she once excoriated for trying to bring down her husband. (That was before she knew the truth about Monica Lewinsky.) Former House speaker Newt Gingrich torpedoed the "Hillarycare" health insurance plan in 1994 but that hasn't stopped her making recent common cause with him - on the need to reform health care......

The big question is: will spurning her base enable her to win enough "rednecks' to become the 44th president or will she just end up being reviled by everyone?


That is offensive. Besides I can't believe she would be able to appeal to that many men as leader of the country.

If the GOP can't even mount an effective counter-candidate to challenge her in the Senate race, who will they have in 08?

Like it or not, Hillary is the one to beat in the Dem primaries, and so far, none of the wannabes seem to have the stuff to take her on and win.

Like it or not, Hillary is probably the one to beat in the 08 race, and so far, the GOP list of wannabes seem to lack the stuff to take her on and win. So far, some 13 Pubbies have expressed definite interest in running in 08, plus names mentioned by others include Rice (who has said 'no') and Cheney (who has said 'no').

Hillary is going to be the one to beat. And that, like HER or not, it going to be tough to do. She can probably count on 95% of those who voted for Kerry, because they would vote for any Dem. She can count on the MSM to gloss over her ills and gush over her. She can count on a contingent of women from the independent voters, just because they would vote for any major female who is the top of a major political ticket.

Like it or not, it was Hillary, and not the good ole GOP, who pushed illegal immigration to the top of the pile of issues. Look for her to pick and choose more such issues after her Senate win. What does that mean? It means SHE will be the one setting the issues for 08, and they will be ones she knows the GOP is weak in.

She's going to be tough to beat. Too many just write her off and say 'she can't win'. They will be the ones replacing the Kerryites on the therapists' couches in 08. I sincerely hope someone does rise in the opposition ranks who can defeat her. I just don't see anyone with the stature--most of the GOP baker's dozen wannabes won't make it to SuperTuesday, much less be able to take her on in the main election.

It hinges on who the GOP final candidate is. If they find a strong candidate, they might have a chance. If they dig out an old tired good-ole-party loyalist, they are doing to lose this one, just like they did in 96.

"The First Female President" alone will be enough to a) vastly increase the Dems share of women who currenly vote, and b) bring out enough new women voters, to easily take the presidency. (The media on MTV and CNN and CBS etc will sway millions of existing female voters and bring in millions of females who have not voted previously. It will have this same affect on liberal men, who are who pansies by definition.)

Unless the Pubs co-opt the "first female president" thing. And even then I would still bet on the Hildebeast. Dems are working now to improve the vote rigging and stealing tactics they used in 2000 and 2004.
