Childlessness A Sin, Southern Baptist Leader Says
KWTX ^ | 1-17-06

Posted on 01/17/2006 1:31:49 PM PST by WKB

Rev. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, says it's "an absolute revolt against God's design" if husbands and wives purposely avoid bearing children.

On his Web site and other articles and interviews, Mohler argues that "marriage, sex and children are part of one package" and that "to deny any part of this wholeness is to reject God's intention in creation and his mandate revealed in the Bible."

In a CNN interview, the Baptist leader added, “We grow up by having children. Without that responsibility, we have a generation of perpetual adolescents just growing old."

What about if you're not married and don't have kids? Is it a sin then?

I know a couple that pops out one new baby after another, because a wealthy grandmother gives a $10k per year tax free gift for each baby they have. Uncle Sam throws in all kinds of goodies as well.

perpetual adolescents

That's what I wanted from my adulthood. It's because of that that I didn't have kids.

Where is the scripture to back this up?

???

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number;

Yeah, well what would the dear man have to say if I had popped out 2 or 3 kids in the middle of my husbands 10-year drug abuse crisis? Then I would've been a selfish dumba$$.

I wish people would just shut up about it already. It's hard enough having been in a situation where having children was profoundly NOT the right choice, much less getting continually judged by jackasses like this guy and some of the people on this board.

I'm gonna guess you aren't Catholic. :^P

He isn't actually saying childlessness is a sin; he's saying that breaking the natural connection between marriage, sex and childbirth is a sin. There's nothing in what he says that would say that chastity or impotence are sinful.

“We grow up by having children. Without that responsibility, we have a generation of perpetual adolescents just growing old."

Put more precisely, it is the experience of participating in the act of creation through which we are drawn closer to Godliness, for if we participate in that act with our hearts open to understanding God through it, we can experience a reflection of the sacrifice, joy, love, and compassion that the Father has for his children. Thus, we "grow up" spiritually.

Wasn't God's very first commandment to mankind to be fruitful and multiply? In Genesis. I'm not agreeing 100% with what he is saying but it's not without some scriptural foundation.

I don't see that anywhere in the bible.

The original commandment given to Adam and Eve was to be fruitful and multiply and subdue the earth. Well, that's pretty much been done.

Better to spend time talking pregnant women out of having abortions than trying to make married couples procreate when they do not wish to do so.

No, I meant why isn't the preacher posting scripture to back up his beliefs.

Somehow I think this article is missing a big part of his statement. At least it seems so.

He does have a point, in that there are many people who are sexually active either within a marriage or outside of marriage - and the last thing they are thinking of is having a child. And, heaven forbid!, if they should conceive a baby, they then seek to get rid of it. Isn't this the problem in the western world, which is why Europe is being overrun with Moslems??????

I never cease to be amazed how FReepers (FREEPERS!!! of all people!) uncritically accept as true any news report about someone (or something) they don't like.

For my part, I ASSUME that this report is inaccurate to some degree.

When you are 75 years old, sitting and looking out into the backyard with no grandkids to watch play, make cookies for or spoil...

then you might just regret not having children...

Amen Brother.

Not that I wouldn't like the opportunity to be married and have children...but In Hoc's dated a lot sketchy girls, which has precluded him from taking the leap.

“Be fruitful and increase in number...

I thought that instruction was directed toward Adam and Eve. That should let everybody else off the hook.
