Gayety at the Golden Globes

James Hirsen, NewsMax.com

Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006

In contrast with the Academy Awards, where approximately 6,000 voters pick the winners, about 80 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association determine the outcome of the Golden Globes.

The Globes are thought to be fairly reliable predictors of the Oscars. We'll have to wait until March 5 to see if the pattern holds true.

The 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards show proved to be a politically charged affair. The first award set the tone for the evening. It went to George Clooney for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in "Syriana."

During his acceptance speech, Clooney said, "I thought Paul Giamatti was gonna win ... this is early. I haven't had a drink yet."

Then he added what has come to be the perfunctory political reference. Clooney said: "I want to thank Jack Abramoff ... you know, just because. First one up, get the ball rolling."

Rachel Weisz took home the Supporting Actress prize for "The Constant Gardener," a liberally distorted conspiracy thriller.

Geena Davis won Best Actress in a TV Show for the incessantly promoted Hillary conditioner, "Commander In Chief."

Davis focused on the cuddly woman-as-president theme in her carefully prepared acceptance speech. She said, "As I was coming in, I felt a tug on my skirt and it was a little girl 8 or 10 in her first party dress and she said, ‘Because of you I want to be president someday.'"

The audience responded with a collective "Awwwww" and Davis added: "Well, that didn't really happen. But it could have."

An awards show these days wouldn't be complete without a drug reference. Leave it to last year's Oscar host Chris Rock to do the dishonors.

While introducing the nominees for Best Actress in a TV Series, Rock explained that Mary-Louise Parker of "Weeds" "plays a suburban mom who deals dope." He added the commentary: "Ain't that what America's all about? Yeah."

Parker was up against four of the "Desperate Housewives" stars. Rock quipped: "You kinda feel sorry for Louise Parker. ... ‘Desperate Housewives' is one of the biggest shows on the planet and ‘Weeds' is only watched by Snoop Doggy Dogg."

Much to Rock's and everyone else's amazement, Parker beat out the four inquisitive residents of Wisteria Lane.

As expected, the most politically correct flick, "Brokeback Mountain," snagged the biggest awards. The "unconventional" cowboy film won Best Picture-Drama, Best Director for Ang Lee, Best Screenplay and Best Song. (The song was co-written by Bernie Taupin and titled "A Love That Will Never Grow Old.")

Ang Lee's win makes underdogs of George Clooney and Woody Allen for the Best Director Oscar. Adding to the gender-jumbled theme of the evening was Felicity Huffman's Best Actress in a Drama win for her role as a male who seeks to become a female in "Transamerica."

Philip Seymour Hoffman took the award for Best Actor in a Drama for "Capote."

The Globes picked the anti-American "Paradise Now," a sympathetic portrayal of suicide bombers, as the Best Foreign Language film. In an apparent aberration, "Walk the Line" was the big winner in the Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category. The Johnny Cash biopic won Best Picture, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Actress for Reese Witherspoon.

Watching the awards show I thought now more than ever, cinematically speaking, we're not in Kansas anymore. And likewise the Kansas farmhouse is swirling farther and farther away from Hollywood.

Hollyweird loves the "Rump Ranger Romance."

The Golden Globes are joke.

The awards are decided by 85 foreign critics who, IIRC, remain anonymous.

85 Freepers could get together and give out awards and they would be equally relevent.

Great pix! Life-long Republican too.

Gosh it's gonna be a long time until the Oscars are over. The "gayety" festivities started just as the War on Christmas ended. Very bad marketing strategy. The hits should be short and savage, not drawn out. People just get tired of hearing about it and then start to resent it.

For those of you who might have forgotten, there was a scene from one of the great Western Classics -- The Magnificent Seven ( yes, those where the times when Men were REAL men, not fags. Yul Brynner still provided that awesome air that no one could duplicate ).

This is the scene that impressed me about the Hollywood of
1960...

Charles Bronson plays Bernard O' Reilly, a down on his luck gunfighter who joins the 7 gunfighters to defend a Mexican Village from bandits. He is idolized by three kids in the village who admire his bravery, skill and machismo.

When one of the kids tell him that his own father is a coward for failing to stand up to the gangsters and not
learning how to fight, Bernard grabs the kid and proceeds to give him a whacking. He then lectures him thusly ( his words are a classic ) :

"Don't you ever say that again about your fathers, because they are not cowards! You think I'm brave because I carry a gun? Well, your fathers are much braver, because they carry responsibility — for you, your brothers, your sisters, and your mothers. And this responsibility is like a big rock that weighs a ton. It bends and it twists them until finally it buries them under the ground. I have never had this kind of courage. Running a farm, working like a mule every day with no guarantee what will ever come of it... this is bravery. That's why I never started anything like that. That's why I never will. See? I told you! You see your fathers?"

THAT FOLKS, WAS THE TIME WHEN HOLLYWOOD STILL CELEBRATED THE VIRTUES OF COURAGE, DEFENSE OF FREEDOM, RESPONSIBILITY, KEEPING YOUR WORD, AND HONORING YOU PARENTS.

That a macho cowboy movie would even have screenplay like that is awesome to hear ( in hindsight )

Sadly, You don't get to see screenplay like that anymore...

Amid all the PC crapola, they did give out one award that was worthy: Hugh Laurie for "House," the best show on TV. And his speech was very funny and witty, with no political commentary at all.

Also, I've seen "Capote" and Philip Seymour Hoffman deserved to win. He was playing a guy who happened to be gay, but that had almost zero to do with the story, except as one of many factors that made him seem like such a weirdo when he first appeared in the small town to investigate the "In Cold Blood" murders. It was treated as a mere biographical fact, not a major plot point. The movie was about how he sold his soul to get the story of that book, becoming friendly with the murderers to get their story and getting all emotional about their fate, but not so much that he didn't lie about helping find a lawyer for their appeal because he really needed them to be executed so he could have a final chapter.

NEWSFLASH, and they hate the war, but love all things gay and liberal.

"yes, those where the times when Men were REAL men, not fags."

You've apparently never seen Ernest Borgnine smoldering at Sterling Hayden in "Johnny Guitar". The REAL men in that movie are Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge. Seriously, that movie is incredibly campy for 1954 - and even for today! :)

Just establish a special award for "MOST POLITICALLY CORRECT", already, and give out the other awards based on actual merit.

Sure, rich fruits are probably buying tickets by the armload to create a false "band wagon" effect.

Why do these idiots continually refer to the poofter flick as a "cowboy" movie???? I haven't, seen it, and will not, but I understand it's about a couple of fairy sheep herders. Is this correct????

Correct. And this is also how they cannot control their urges to a point where they actually destroy their own families because of it.

Of course, the obligatory OPEN GAY SEX SCENE IN THE TENT which goes on and on and on will never fail to tiltilate the one segment of society that will watch it again and again and again.
