Senate passes bill to make keg parties a thing of the past

MONTGOMERY - Keg parties at fraternities and many other places would be outlawed under a bill passed 30-0 Tuesday by the state Senate.

If the bill becomes law, people could drink draft beer only at a bar, restaurant, private club or other retail establishment licensed for beer sales by the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, said Sen. Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, the bill's sponsor. People could not buy a keg and take it elsewhere to drink.

Singleton said he proposed the bill in an effort to stop teenagers from drinking beer.

Donna Alexander, a lobbyist for the Alabama Wholesale Beer Association, said the association supports Singleton's efforts to pass the proposed law, because it could curb binge drinking and underage drinking.

Robert Hill, an attorney for the state ABC Board, said if the bill becomes law, "someone could not sell you a keg to take with you, to consume off the licensed premises that sold the beer." The board has not taken a position on the bill.

Asked if an organization could get a special-events license from the ABC Board as a way to hold a keg party if the bill were to become law, Hill noted that the state fee on such a license is $150, and said the beer would have to be sold at the event.

I don't think I could drink enough draft beer to get drunk.

Well, at least we have fond memories of trying, eh?

Are the Baptists behind this?

Were religious organizations supporting this bill?

Just wondering...

Anybody who thinks that needs a lecture from Vince Lombardi on giving 110% : )

I don't think it's staying inside you long enough to take effect. You must have a leak.

Slippery slope is where we were in the early 90s. We are in free-fall off the cliff now.

I think you are right.

This screws over people with home taps as well.

There's no reason why a normal, well-adjusted person should have a keg in their home. It just isn't decent! /neoprohibitionist mode off

Nah! Without booze, dancing, card games and cohabitation, the Baptists wouldn't have an agenda (raised a Baptist, so I can say that).

Given the vote tally (30-0), it's more likely that statists of all stripes (and MADD) are behind this.

I predict a booming keg-sales business in neighboring states.

A keg party is a rite of passage, I am rather sick of people saying what is good....and what is bad. Where did freedom of choice go ?

I am a believer in seat belts. I have seen a lot of people hurt or killed due to not wearing seat belts.

I was 20 years old when I "hosted" my first young adult party at my own apartment.
(100% attended by 100+ active duty USAF enlisted personnel)
Along with a keg of beer, was an alternative alcohol laced beverage, a brand new plastic lined aluminum garbage can with a base of several bottles of "Everclear" , and an eclectric mixture of canned fruit punch and soda.
Given the earned wisdom of age and 20/20 hindsight...I think a keg of beer alone would have sufficed. Do they still sell Everclear? /sarcasm//

I keep remembering that line from The Once and Future King, "Everything not compulsory is forbidden."

I live in a dry county in Arkansas. The nearest wet county is 25 miles away. This wet county is surrounded by dry counties. Guess where everyone in these five counties go to shop and eat out. Guess which one of these counties is growing faster than the other counties? If you see someone you know from your dry county in a bar or liquor store they act like they don't see you or don't know you. Out lawing kegs will only make them more appealing to young people. How stupid can you get.

I wonder if the movie about Steve Walsh's kid had anything to do with the over-nanny craze????

No smokes, no beer . . .

A fair joyless place this brave new world.

Enjoy your bowl of granola and don't be late for your yoga lesson. I'm sleeping in.
