Gyllenhaal: More Cash for the Wimp! (Writer Admits That "Bareback Mountain" STINKS)
Slate ^ | January 14, 2006 | Mickey Kaus

That big Oscar nomination would be for Brokeback Mountain--which would be perverse because Gyllenhaal's the fatal problem with the movie. He doesn't seem to have any particular appealing quality that would cause Heath Ledger to carry a torch for him for decades. Gyllenhaal's early-on attempts to charmingly romp in the wilderness fall flat--it wasn't just Meghan Daum's date who was checking his watch in the first half of the film--and in the second half of the film he starts to whine. Big love for Gyllenhaal is supposed to be the motor that drives the movie, but the motor doesn't turn. The film only comes alive when Gyllenaal is dead, and we're left with Heath Ledger in his trailer. ...

So basically, just on a dramatic basis, Bareback Mountain sucks, as this writer has indicated. However, that won't keep it from winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. The reason why is that none of the Academy members would dare NOT to vote for it because failure to do so would make them feel like bigots.

It will win Best Picture. Hollywood is determined to give a big rectal push for gayism.

Read Mark Steyn's review of the movie - www.marksteyn.com Sounds pretty unfriendly for gays - the guys end up in abysmal situations not because they are forced to "live a lie" but because they are self absorbed with out of control sexual appetites.

Hmmm might make a good case for manogamy and chastity.

You've nailed it.

Remember when they all wore the "red ribbon" to support AIDS?

I'm sure many of them did out of conviction, but if they didn't, they would be a bigot in their own minds - and of others, in a town with a fast job turnover.

As Rush says, "This ribbons says I care more than you!"

They are terrified if they don't vote for it, inside they may be a "secret homophobe"! Egads!

Laura Ingraham said it was boring as hell. From waht I've gathered it is a boring, implausible, dumb story that has beautiful Wyoming scenery. But since its about poofers, it will win all the awards.

It will win ONLY because it is a BIG GAY MOVIE. As this writer has indicated, it is a FLOP dramatically. However, it makes no difference. No matter how bad this flick is, it WILL win. Just imagine the booing at the Oscars if some other picture wins. Also the Acadamy Award voters would be denounced as bigots.

Even the name of the thing sucks! Who in the world would want to watch a couple of queer cowboy's in the first place?

You know with gays, you have the slave and you have the master. Jake was the slave, he was playing the part.

Why can't Hollywood get gays to play gays? Straights just will never get it right.

I stopped watching the Oscars when Courage Under Fire was completely ignored. I thought Denzel Washington did a phenominal acting job but he was ignored too and now I am given to understand that the Golden Globes Award is just a precursor to the Oscars. Its a waste of their time (and a waste my time and money if I go see it).

I think "manogamy" is the problem here.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Steyn, among his many other talents, is a very fine theater and movie critic. He knows his stuff. His column on Liza Minelli's umpteenth comeback a few years ago was classic. The only really emotionally affecting and carefully crafted element of Brokeback Mountain was Ledger's performance. Other than that the movie disappoints.

They'll also vote for it because it gives the finger to the average American...

It's rather surprising to me how remarkably well the film has done so far considering the limited release. When I paid my routine daily visit to Box Office Mojo this morning I did a double take at seeing BM was #1 for Tuesday. I put my glasses on to make sure I was seeing right. LOL

Personally I doubt that all the accolades it's received are due to some vast, sprawling conspiracy to turn America gay. By most accounts it's an extremely well-made and powerful movie, and even if it is the reaction wouldn't be universal. I don't know of any movie that someone, or rather many someones, don't much like. My sister-in-law thinks Return of the King is one of the worse movies around, which I think is deranged, but whatever!

It still made $1 billion bucks.

If anybody thinks this is getting any awards for quality, they are mistaken. The only reason it is getting play is because of its perverse agenda and so Hollywood can shove its filth in the face of America.

"Don't forget about the other BIG GAY MOVIES, Capote "

Has anyone seen Capote? This is one movie I'd consider seeing (once it makes it to PPV or Starz). I like the actor portraying him and have always considered Capote an interesting character..not to mention the Alabama connection.

I can't help but watch the 'red carpet' shows..love to see what folks are wearing. Reese Witherspoon made a comment about she and her Husband being an anomaly in Hollyweird. So very true.
