....Javers then took it upon himself to establish, right then, a completely new set of rules regarding columnists disclosure of the receipt of corporate money. All previous standards were null and void...

Fumento's defense sounds pretty good to me. Fumento is one of the most insightful columnists working today. If freepers want to write him a note of support, his e-mail is fumento@pobox.com.

The italicized identifier at the bottom says he is a writer for Scripps Howard News Service but in the story he says they fired him earlier.
Must be still claiming to be their writer (though he claims they didn't pay) on legal advice.

Under Javers’ Rules, there’s absolutely no distinction from a book grants to an employer and pay-for-play for individual columns. Further, once you’ve benefited from a grant you are considered forever in the donor’s debt....

....Javers’ Rules also declare that any mention of the donor corporation triggers the rules, including a column I wrote devoting a single sentence to Monsanto. And – very importantly – Javers’ Rules are retroactive....

....If all this sounds insane, remember there really was a time when harmless old biddies went up in flames simply because a neighbor wanted their land or livestock....

Interesting, but not surprising on the whole. Sounds like the usual partisan politics to me.

I sent him the followng e-mail

Hi Michael

I read your article from a post on Free Republic that referred us to it.

I just want to offer support to you. Hang in there.

I, and others have been battling Ocean Conservancy, and the Conservation Law Foundation locally here in the Boston area for the last few years. OC and CLF want to implement Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) here. They have had success in Kalifornia (California) and Florida. We feel their real agenda, under the guise of protecting natural resources.. is NO Fishing, period.

Our attitude is: maybe some marine areas should be shut down, and then again maybe they should be kept open -but lets have an honest discussion on the subject, and not just close areas to accommodate a no fishing agenda.

OC and CLF have tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of employees to overwhelm us. We are fighting this out of our pockets. So far we have been successful by attending public hearings and getting on committees, but they will just keep moving the goal posts and raising the ante, and broadening the field of play.

I am sure you are familiar with the tactics of these groups.

Don't get discouraged. Stay with it, and be honest in your writings.

Lots of us fight against the Greens and Enviros in obscurity but do it because it is the right thing to do when they lie and deliberately mislead the public, and have a hidden agenda. - tom

Fumento misspelled Eamon Javers' name.

Shouldn't it be "Eamon Javert"?

;-)
