REDACTION LOOPHOLE: ACCESS TO THE BARRETT REPORT
- by Mia T, 01.20.06
|

he judges who ostensibly redacted 120 pages of the Barrett report established a means by which the American people can see those redactions: Any member of Congress can legally request access to the redactions and can publish them..
The serious '"culture of corruption" in the clinton DOJ and IRS that is detailed by the report makes one wonder about the nature of the crimes and abuse that the clintons felt compelled to redact.
Even a small subset of what we do know about the redactions argues for their immediate disclosure by Congress. (Only in the surreal world of the clintons would someone suggest with a straight face that disclosure of the crime of obstruction of justice is precluded by privacy considerations.)
We know that clinton pettifoggers labored mightily and long to gut and bury this report with some 140 motions, sleights of hand... and, when necessary, the clintons' heavy hand.
We know that charges of the clintons' retaliatory IRS audits of both their political foes and their victims of rape and predation are said to be included in the redacted material.
The mutual protection racket writ large is apparently alive and well in DC. (Is Filegate rearing its ugly head yet again?)
We mustn't let Congress get away with this coverup. Call. E-mail. Fax. Don't let up.
And remember the responses on Election Day.

RE: a not-so-modest proposal concerning hillary clinton
Dear Concerned Americans,
Hillary Clinton's revisionist tome notwithstanding, 'living history' begets a certain symmetry. It is in that light that I make this not-so-modest proposal on this day, exactly 64 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The context of our concern today--regardless of political affiliation--is Iraq and The War on Terror, but the larger fear is that our democracy may not survive.
We have the requisite machines, power and know-how to defeat the enemy in Iraq and elsewhere, but do we have the will?
In particular, do we have the will to identify and defeat the enemy in our midst?
Answerable to no one, heir apparent in her own mind, self-serving in the extreme, Hillary Clinton incarnates this insidious new threat to our survival.
What we decide to do about Missus Clinton will tell us much about what awaits us in these perilous new times.

Absolutely -- as is the case with the Abramoff(sp?) situation, let the chips fall where they may. Above all, I want honest representation, not same-old, same-old with a meaningless (R) after their names.
Unfortunately, I see little chance of the same standards being applied to both sides of the aisle. Similar shady behavior will be painted in the media with different brushes for the Dems and the Pubbies. Think Harry Reid is in any danger? No way, pure as the driven snow. Just ask the NYT.
My only hope is that our children are engaged and understanding what goes on. I'm showing mine...

Do you know why the police pursue criminals for years after the case has grown cold? Or why Nazi hunters still work on tracking down Nazis, sixty years after the fall of the Third Reich?
Because when you break the law, you break the law. Particularly heinous in this case is that elected officials threatened/forced/bribed people to keep silent about their lawbreaking... and one of these criminals has designs on the Presidency of the United States.
Wake up, dummy.

This is the kind of thing that I mean when I say that Republican and Democrat legislators are holding hands, walking in lockstep and sleeping in the same single space bed using each others shoulders to cry on while they sleep. If we don't have at least 200 Republican Congressmen jointly signing the publication orders then WE MUST NOT RE-ELECT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM!
The entire current list of names in Congress are all liars, traitors to their Oath of Office in my eyes.
The fact that our Presidentand the Republican Senators haven't pushed the Republican Congressmen to publish the entire report shows me that they fall under the same catagory as those in Congress.
We do not have a two party system in our government! What more does it take to prove this to America? How long must we live a lie?

"What are they hiding, and why?"
They are hiding the fact that we do not have a two party system in our government today. Legislators are deceitfully following the (renamed) New World Order Plan that goes all the way back to the League of Nations.
Continually decreasing the size of our military, bases and number of personel is the most obvious of this. Our national park system is under the control of the United Nations. Then we have Agenda 21 on top of that.
The most difficult of all is trying to get American citizens/taxpayers/voters to see the obvious. I love the way FReepers jump all over the New York Times and the MSM when the truth is right in front of their noses!

Politicians are a 'Me first' group, statesmen are "My country first" crowd, yet we continually elect politicians? Keep electing politicians and we won't even have a sovereign country pretty soon.

My theory that the two parties are better friends to each other than either one is to the American people will have an excellent test in this one. My theory is that since we have dirt on their side and they have dirt on our side, if both sides keep the secrets both sides will continue to live their lives of privilege and we will continue to pick up the tab.

"After a thorough reading of the report, it would not be unreasonable to conclude, as I have, that there was a cover-up at high levels of our government, and it appears to have been substantial and coordinated," Mr. Barrett's office said in a statement issued with the report.... But Republicans are reserving judgment on the report, about 120 pages of which was ordered removed by a three judge panel that oversaw Mr. Barrett's investigation, until they see it in its entirety. "There will be a movement to get the whole thing out," a top Republican aide said last night. "The American taxpayers have paid an enormous sum to get this report, and the American taxpayers expect to read it." Republicans are said to be weighing two options in pursuit of full release. One is to have the three-judge panel release the redactions on the grounds that the full Senate should be able to make a judgment on its potential value to the public interest. Senator Levin, a Democrat of Michigan, is said to have seen the report already. Republicans say that they should be able to see it, too. Another option, which Republican sources described as less desirable, would be to insert language into an unrelated piece of legislation that would order full release of the report against the wishes of the judicial panel. The Republican chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Grassley, of Iowa, inserted language into a Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill in October that would have resulted in full disclosure of the report, but that language was diluted in committee by House of Representatives staff, a source familiar with the investigation said. Mr. Grassley is now poised to make another attempt at inserting the request into another bill when the full Congress returns to session at the end of the month. I love Tyrrell's prose. It has a certain grace and charm.
|
The aforementioned New York Times story is a perfect example of the kind of stories confected by the Clintons and their lawyers over the years. It appears to be fair-minded, but read carefully it is interlarded with the Clintons' defenses. The Times' story's first words contain the sullen line "longest independent counsel investigation in history." Soon Barrett's work is described as a "scathing report." Then we have this land mine: Barrett's work "came to be a symbol of the flawed effort to prosecute high-level corruption through the use of independent prosecutors." Later one of the individuals mentioned in the report is quoted as writing that the gravamen of the report is "a scurrilous falsehood."
Finally let us return to the Times' amazing omission, neglecting to mention that the Barrett Report as released yesterday has 120 pages redacted. How do we account for this error? Alas, the Times' leakers lied to the paper. Its story ends saying, "But after Congressional Republicans attached a rider to a Department of Housing and Urban Development spending bill requiring publication of the full report, the judicial panel in November ordered a full disclosure." That was not the end of it. Had a fact checker from the Times called me, I would have pointed out that later, in December, legislation was snuck through Congress that allowed the redactions to stand.
As Novak reports, those 120 pages can be seen by any member of Congress, who can then make them public. The drama continues. Reporting the Report The American Spectator ^ | 1/20/2006 | R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.
