11 People Indicted in Ecoterrorism Plot
AP via Yahoooo ^ | January 20, 2006 | MARK SHERMAN

WASHINGTON - Federal prosecutors have indicted 11 people in a series of arsons in the Northwest that have been claimed by the radical groups Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front, Justice Department officials said Friday.

The suspects are believed responsible for 17 incidents, including sabotaging a power plant, in a conspiracy that dates back to 1996, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the indictment was under seal in U.S. District Court in Eugene, Ore. It was expected to be made public later Friday.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FBI Director Robert Mueller were expected to talk about the indictment Friday at a news conference in Washington.

Some of those charged Friday remain at large, the officials said.

Two defendants, Jonathan Christopher Mark Paul, 39, and Suzanne Nicole "India" Savoie, 28, were both ordered held without bail in Eugene Thursday, pending further hearings.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court in Eugene accused Paul, a firefighter, of setting firebombs that burned down a horse slaughterhouse in 1997. The ALF claimed responsibility for that fire, which caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

Savoie, who works in a group home for the developmentally disabled, is accused of serving as a lookout for a fire in 2001 that destroyed offices of a lumber mill. The ELF claimed responsibility for that fire.

Ah yes, the whacked-out fringes of the left. Such jewels in our society. In these cases, I sure wish we could bring back the old-fashioned justice of the West...and have Judge Roy Bean presiding....that would stop most of this left-wing insane crap.

Stories like this, where anonymous sources are leaking "sealed indictment information" or "top secret information" etc., really disturb me. For ths simple reason that the anonymous source is often times not only breaking the law but jeapordizing the case against these terrorists because of the fact that they are leaking the information. I mean come on people information is sealed for a reason. And if a case is overturned or lost because some anonymous source has leacked information I think that both the media entity and the source, should they ever be discovered should be charged with criminal mischief at the very least. In cases where state secrets are being revealed they should be tried for treason and sentenced accordingly (either life imprisionment or in war time death). I realize this is a democracy, but we have laws and the rule of law for a reason, and the media is stepping on it at every turn.

Why is this 'eco-terror' any more than beating up a black person is a 'hate crime'?

Isn't this just arson?

A federal court might produce serious sentences - but, I doubt it. Not in Olympia or Portland.

Their title, not mine. ELF and ALF have both been deemed terrorist organizations. They claim to do their deeds in the name of the ecology. Therefore somebody coined the phrase.

Yeah, I can see that. If it is an organized group of people that set out to destroy property, I'd say they are a criminal organization too.

Young, idealistic students on most university and college campuses are subjected to 'emotionalized' ideological indoctrination by left wing professors.

We have to stem that tide somehow - or many of our youth will be years wandering in the wilderness until maturity and common sense take hold.

ELF and ALF have both been deemed terrorist organizations.

They are P.O.S. and deserve to die. The sooner they leave the planet, the quicker they'll become good eco terrorists.

Real environmental protection starts with the multi-generational farms here in America that are intended to be handed from generation to generation.

Have yet to see a horse trotted out by the government agency that has ever been "improved upon" by the government.

A few days ago a 3 Million dollar Camano Island home was torched by these nuts. A pink bed sheet with a spray painted message was hung up by those who did it. The local Seattle news media was reluctant to say who the suspected organizations were. This was one of many homes and condo's that were torched by ELF or ALF in the last few years in the Puget Sound area.

They need treat this rats the same way we treat international terrorist.

It's becoming quite apparent that several of these individuals are facing decades in the Federal slammer for domestic terrorism. They will be fortunate if they are charged with mere arson...

Is law enforcement just sitting back waiting forthem to kill some folks?

They should be labled as terrorists and tried in the same fashion as Johnny Jihad and Jose Padilla ... no bail, quick sentencing.

In some cases, the anonymous sources leaking the information are the prosecuting attorneys themselves, to force the defendants into a panic move that will catch them.

I don't know. I used to work at the Elizabeth C. Miller Center for Urban Horticulture that this group fire bombed. I was the only true conservative that had work in the lab.

When you injure liberals, like they did, gloves come off. It will be interesting to see what shakes out.

I chose the wrong word, at the UDUB no one was injured physically. Decades of research and two doctor thesis' were lost. That is injurious, since the data could not be reproduced.

Anybody who thinks ELF and ALF are not capable of eventually causing the death of humans needs to read some of the statements of the movements' leaders.

Just watched the announcing press conference with Gonalez. They outlined the indictments, and all the questions from reporters are about the Bin Laden tape.

It's got to be really irritating to put together a press conference where NO ONE present cares about the issue at hand.

We need to get prosecuting, see some of the things the idiots say...

"Monkeywrenching, (unlawful sabotage of industrial extraction/development equipment and infrastructure) is not mindless – targets are carefully picked for their strategic value." - Earth First

The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines. Hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. Population control is the only answer -- Paul Ehrlich - The Population Bomb (1968)

"If we are vandals, so were those who destroyed forever the gas chambers of Buchenwald or Auschwitz." -Alberta (CA) Report, May 14, 2001: ELF's North American spokesman, Craig Rosebraugh

We advocate biodiversity for biodiversity’s sake. It may take our extinction to set things straight -- David Foreman, Earth First!

I thought the reporters' questions were downright stupid. One asked if the release of Bin Laden's tape yesterday was connected to these arrests. DUH!!!!

Reminds me of the time I worked for a newspaper, and went to a press conference after the murder of our county's sheriff's son in law, who was found stabbed 28 times.

One stupid TV reporter asked "Do you think it was a homicide???????-

Visualize, Voluntary Human Extinction

A few weeks ago, I was having lunch with some people from school (mostly leftist weenies). A gal who works in my building mentioned something about this group, something to the effect that their goal was something good.

I replied back "Really, human extinction? So, are they actively killing themselves?"

She says "Well, no."

Me: "(Sarcastically) Wow, thats too bad. I'd hate to think of a radical group NOT practicing what they preach. (Seriously)If you know any people like this, let them know that when/if they're ready to personally become extinct I'll loan them my shotgun and give them a shell"

(I received disgusted looks because of my statement)

She follows up with "Well, in my opinion, overpopulation is the big reason for environmental damage"

(This comes right after she was talking about how she and her husband want to have a kid. I think you know what my next comment was!)

These idiots rattle my bones.

The ELF and ALF web sites used to have downloadable sabotage manuals. I checked recently, and those have been removed. Maybe the Feds got after then.

I wouldn't say that. If the info was available to proactively nail these dirtballs, as in a conspiracy investigation and prosecution as in thearticle which is the thread subject. Sometimes you catch 'em, sometimes you don't. You'd probably be surprised what doesn't make the news. Could more be done about this? I'd say so. And on point two, I couldn't agree more.

Pardon my incorrect phrasiology. I should have used 'judicial system' instead of law enforcement. In my cluttered mind I was assuming that judges are aware of their responsibility for enforcing the law as well as you guys on the ground.
