Australian in Bosnia pyramid riddle

January 20, 2006 - 7:39AM

Australian archaeologist Royce Richards is among a team preparing to look for the truth behind a theory that Bosnia-Herzegovina has an ancient pyramid.

Archaeologists from Australia, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, and Slovenia will begin excavation work in April on the Visocica hill, 32 kilometres north-west of Sarajevo.

The hill is quite symmetrical, and the theory that it was once a pyramid is supported by preliminary investigations.

If true, it would rewrite world history, putting Europe alongside South America and of course Egypt as homes of ancient pyramids.

Bosnian Semir Osmanagic put forward his theory last year that a 100 metre geometrically-shaped hill with evenly shaped sides and corners that point north, south, east and west is an ancient man-made edifice.

Osmanagic, who has spent 15 years studying the pyramids of the Americas is convinced the hill is a genuine man-made pyramid from an ancient civilization.

His preliminary excavations shows what he believes is evidence that the earth has been shaped to form a pyramid and covered in prehistoric concrete and stone blocks.

"We have already dug out stone blocks which I believe are covering the pyramid," Osmanagic said.

"We found a paved entrance plateau and discovered underground tunnels.

"You don't have to be an expert to realise what this is."

Osmanagic's assertions have been supported by experts studying aerial and satellite images.

Theorists believe the Illyrian people who inhabited the Balkan region before the conquering Slavic tribes overran them about 1,400 years ago had the sophistication to shape a hill into a pyramid.

Excavation work to test Osmanagic's theory will begin on April 14 in the Visoko region and is expected to continue until October and the rugged mountainous area has become an archaeological park.

Do you have latitude and longitude info for Google Earth viewing?

"I never heard of the Illyrians until this article"

Neither had I.

Here is the Wikipedia link. Not too much info, but I learned something.

That was tongue in cheek, at least part of it. Yes the Great Pyramid is an engineering marvel though I disagree greatly that its beyond modern man. My real point is that Im surprised that all early groups of men didnt build pyramids of some type. The pyramid, the engineering difficulties of large ones aside, is an incredibly simple thing and one even children come to quickly when playing with blocks.

"The ones in the Americas and Southeast Asia are very recent compared to the ones in Egypt."

I believe the pyramids at Caral, in Peru, have been recently dated older that the Egyptian pyramids.

The largest pyramid in the world is in (I believe) Mexico.

Seems that the second oldest pyramid is the Hellinkon in Greece dated to , 2720BC.

"Im surprised every continent on earth doesnt have pyramids. Put some stones on the ground and then put fewer stones on tone of those stones and so on and so on. Pretty simple. A pyramid is a glorified pile."

There are pyramids on all (habitable)continents except Australia.

Mexico has more pyramids than all the rest of the world combined. Greece has 16.

Archaeologists are actually very sure how they managed to build it. Blocks were taken from quarries in Aswan, floated down the Nile, rolled on logs to the site, pulled up earthen ramps and put in place. The techniques used were developed by trial and error just like any other construction technique. But what do I know Im not an "intellectual" apparently. My guide, the very nice Mr. Rami when I toured the sites at Giza and Memphis and actually entered the Cheffren pyramid, would be very disappointed in me.

"The only problem with theories such as the one put forward by Robert M. Schoch, is that the various pyramids and pyramidal structures around the world were built at widely differing times. "

Professor Stephen Oppenheimer has similar views

Eden in the East

The Drowned Continent of Southeast Asia
Stephen Oppenheimer

"The biblical flood really did occur - at the end of the last Ice Age. The Flood drowned for ever the huge continetal shelf of Southeast Asia, and caused a population dispersal which fertilized the Neolithic cultures of China, India, Mesopotamia, Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, thus creating the first civilizations. The Polynesians did not come from China but from the islands of Southeast Asia. The domestication of rice was not in China but in the Malay Peninsula, 9,000 years ago."

Many people have and have had similar views. The idea goes back a long way. The FACT remains that the various pyramids and pyramidal structures around the world were built at widely differing times, often separated by thousands of years.

I don't intend to get into a protracted discussion with you about this. However, the link you provided re Caral does not in any way indicate that the pyramidal structures there predate the Egyptian pyramids.

BTW, a Google search on Hellinkon pyramid and +Hellinkon +pyramid turns up no results. Quite interesting for such an important site, don't you think?

Go here.

"The oldest pyramid is that of Hellinikon in Greece, dating from 2,720 BC. There are more than 16 pyramids spread all over Greece. (See Hellenic Pyramids.)"

The "Pyramid" of Hellenikon

According to evidence from the excavations and the typical features of the structure which dates to the end of the 4th century B.C. and not to the prehistoric period, as some scientists have been recently willing to demonstrate. During the later years of Antiquity, the "Pyramid" was considered as a burial monument , a "polyandreion", while nowadays there is no doubt that it was a fort of the type of small strong-holds which controlled the arterial roads and which are known from other regions of the Argolid.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. This "pyramid"-finding "archaeologist" isn't either one:
The World of the Maya
by Sam Osmanagich
[English version]
linked from...
I mentioned earlier the Maya "keepers of knowledge" who are even today left on the planet. In the book "The Mayan Factor" (by Dr.José Arguelles, 1987), I came across this: In the beginning of 1985 I was contacted by a Maya by the name of Humbatz Men. In our conversations I learned that he was using seventeen different Mayan calendars. Archeologists know about only six of them. I met Humbatz finally in Boulder, Colorado where he was giving a lecture entitled "the Astronomy of the Maya." The key part of his presentation and his knowledge was given in his concluding remarks. Humbatz stated that our solar system is the seventh such system which has been mapped by the Maya so far.
