For years, the issue of immigration was little more than a murmur. But now, many people are clamoring for change.
Americans are increasingly saying we've come to a fork in the road -- a time to rethink how we define ourselves as a nation.
To advance the immigration debate, 9NEWS gathered together activists and politicians representing a wide range of views on this subject. We have streamed the entire two-hour town meeting held Saturday, Jan. 7 at the University of Denver's Gates Concert Hall.
Our panelists: Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Gov. Bill Owens, Rep. Terrance Carroll, D-Denver, and former Colorado governor and current head of DU's Center for Public Policy and Contemporary Issues, Dick Lamm.
Invitations were also extended to Democrats Rep. Dianna DeGette, Rep. Tom Udall and Sen. Ken Salazar, but they declined. Sen. Salazar is co-sponsoring one of two immigration reform bills going before Congress this year. No other Republican legislators were invited.
There are several new immigration policies that will be debated at the state Capitol this session.
Republicans will offer several bills to crack down on illegal immigration, including a plan to prohibit state and local governments from employing illegal immigrants and train police to identify and detain them if they are stopped for other infractions.
Democrats said it would be dangerous to make local authorities responsible for enforcing federal immigration laws because of the complexity, with dozens of different immigrant visas
Another proposal would have public schools ask students when they register if they are legal U.S. citizens.
Gov. Bill Owens addressed the impasse on how to end illegal immigration in his State of the State speech. He said he supported tougher border controls and holding employers who hire illegal immigrants accountable. And he advocates separating illegal immigrants into two groups - those who want to stay, and those who simply want to work.
But Owens said, "the real heavy lifting must be done at our nation's Capitol."
Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo, of Littleton, has pushed hard to keep immigration on the national agenda and has even floated the possibility of a presidential bid to put the issue under the spotlight.

Many key points were made in this debate. One of many things I liked was the call for English to become the official language of Colorado and the USA by Tom Tancredo, Governor Bill Owens (R) and former Governor Dick Lamb (D).
I agree, the official language of state and federal govt. should be English.
I'll admit that I am a bit kneejerkish about tancredo, especially with his association with political grifter bay buchanan, and now a slimy pro-abortion, pro-homosexual trial lawyer democrat, paul hackett, parrotting tancredo talking points.
click
Whoever is on the side of Tancredoesque immigration reform is fine with me. This issue overrides all else right now except the war against islamic terrorists.
I don't think English is because of how it was discussed in the debate.
The debate also includes Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. Hickenlooper is the person who owns a restaurant here locally where the illegal alien (Gomez-Garcia) who shot Denver police officer Donnie Young was employed.
Nope. How can Tom Tancredo control that?
You get it, but does Dane?
Hi ajolympian2004!
I am on dial up, so watching the whole 2 hour debate on the internet will take several million years. :(
I was wondering if you could give a summary of Owens plans to deal with illegal immigration during this video? I know that Owens came out in favor of a 2,000 mile fence.
I also know Owens supported a plan popular with House Conservatives to give a work permit to an illegal only if he moves back home first. Did Owens go into detail about this program during the debate?
Also where did Owens and Tancredo agree and disagree???
Thank you very much. :)
I do agree with him 100% when on the issues of the murder of unborn babies and men having sex with other men.
Yes, tancredo is directly linked with bay and pat buchanan, through their PAC.
The buchanans really don't care about issues, only about money coming into their PAC.
I have no doubt the buchanans are welcoming pro-tax hike, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual marriage slimy trial lawyer democrat, paul hackett, parroting the buchanan immigration talking points.
From memory Owens, Lamb and Tancredo agreed on just about everything. I can't recap it now as I must take a nap before the upcoming Broncos game. I was up all night long.

Section 30a. Official language. The English language is the official language of the State of Colorado.
This section is self executing; however, the General Assembly may enact laws to implement this section.
Thank you. :)

Yes, he is. And George Bush is directly linked with Jack Abramoff. Abramoff pledged over $100,000 as a Bush "pioneer". Then worked on the Bush transition team in the Interior department, where he just happened to get the goods for Indian gaming. Cesar Conda, Cheney's former domestic advisor is now working with George Soros. Another Abramoff aid is now working for Cheney. Google it.
Are you sure you want to go there, Dane?
My, my, the tancredo/buchanan DUmmies are coming out of the closet, next thing you know you will try to shut down this thread with profuse profanity(ala the brownshirt DUmmies did on the Wash. Post blog)
You mean the education bill ted "splash" kennedy and his cronies at the NEA, now hate and blast.
A result that very well could have been the strategy to begin with. "Bush hates the CHILDREN!!" and all those ridiculous statements. Again Kennedy/Bush actually did happen, Tancredo/Hacket did not. Very liberal tactic on your part IMO.
Uh ted "splash" kennedy has come out against his own bill, as for tancredo/hackett they are sounding the same especially with their talk of "corporate exploitation" and to boot neither has ever worked in the wealth producing private sector.
Tancredo is a good conservative with a 100% rating from the ACU. You ignore that of course. He has nothing to do with this Hacket guy no matter how much you try to link them falsely like liberals are wont to do. By your own logic you are on the same side as La Raza, Mecha, labor unions, because of your rabid knee-jerk opposition to anything Tancredo. Sorry to use your own rhetoric against you but its kind of fun, in a OCD inducing sort of way.
Your are exactly right mthom.
I am not aware of any connection between Tancredo and Hackett. If any of the Tancredo haters have some evidence of a connection, they should post it.
Tancredo is a solid conservative on every significant issue that matters to conservatives.
LaRaza, MECHA and the labor unions all want to reward illegal aliens with legal status.
Ted Kennedy and President Bush both support rewarding millions of illegal aliens with legal status.
"Tancredo is a good conservative with a 100% rating from the ACU."
Dane has lost.
Tancredo is at the forefront of blocking third world illegals from making America a Third World BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Not Anytime) Republic.
I like my Republic the way it is...The land of the FREE and not for the illegal.
