NBC Cancels Emmy-Winning 'West Wing' After Seven Seasons, Makes Several Midseason Moves

PASADENA, Calif. Jan 22, 2006 — The new president on "The West Wing" will be a real short-timer: NBC announced Sunday it was pulling the plug on the Emmy-winning political drama after seven seasons in May.

NBC, struggling to regain its footing after the worst season in its history, also outlined several midseason schedule changes including the moves of popular dramas "Law & Order" and "Las Vegas."

"The West Wing" announcement wasn't much of a surprise. Although this season's story line with a presidential campaign involving a Democrat played by Jimmy Smits and Republican portrayed by Alan Alda has been strong critically, ratings have sunk with its move to Sunday nights.

The decision to cancel it was made before actor John Spencer, who played former presidential chief of staff Leo McGarry, died of a heart attack Dec. 16, said Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment president.

"There's a point when you look at the ratings and say, it feels like it's time," Reilly said.

The series finale will be May 14, preceded by a one-hour retrospective. The campaign to replace the fictional Josiah Bartlet as president will be settled, NBC said.

Producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme, who created the show and guided it through its early years, will not be involved in the finale, Reilly said.

"The West Wing" won four Emmy Awards for best television drama in a row for its tales of political intrigue. At its prime, it also offered NBC two valuable benefits: critical acclaim and the most upscale audience on television, an important drawing point for advertisers.

or those of you who didn't see it......who are you to comment?

I didn't see Grant's March to the Sea but I can still comment on it. Just because I'm not leftist sympathizer doesn't mean I can't read about leftist tripe.

It was just a democRap vehicle.

As preachy as Left Wing was, it was worthwhile watching at times. Particulary the series of episodes with a Repubican John Goodman as Acting President. "If Zoey Bartlett is harmed, I'm going to bomb the hell out of something."

So you don't allow your family to watch presidential debates?

I still can't believe that Law & Order is still on the air after all this time.

When you "rip from the headlines" your stories, you will never run out of ideas.

The one thing that annoys me about the shows, is that they will take a story from the newspapers, then use it, ON ALL 3 SHOWS with different variations of it.

I've seen them milk the tragedy of Shiavo, into not just 3 stories, but 4 of them, on 3 shows, and from totally different points of view.

Well, as long as the series was going to continue, it was obvious that the Democrats were going to win the election. That way, Smits would be able to keep most of the cast in his new 'administration' rather than recast the entire show.

Now that it's been cancelled, watch them rewrite the story so the Republican (Alda) wins, and then immediately starts a nuclear war and blows up the entire planet....

Probably thinking of Sherman's march against Columbia, Charleston, etc...after the burning of Atlanta.

If Sherman were alive today...think about what he'd do to Iran?

Good.

Has anyone else noticed that Las Vegas seems to have turned into a sitcom? I don't think it started out that way.

They had a Republican chick lawyer on there who actually kicked the other chracters' asses whenever she fenced with them. Nailed them on education, gun control and PC nonsense. Quite good actually. Another episode had the Mayor of DC telling Sheen's character why vouchers were good and needed to be supported (Mayor won that argument). Another talked about the estate tax and showed how the first generation of upper middle class blacks were against it as they now had money to leave to their kids.

Positives: Showed how the business of governing happens, the deal making that goes on within the party and how some of the extremists get in the way of an agenda.

Negatives: First Lady too big for her britches, trying to show Republicans are interested in nothing more than smears when the President was found to have lied about his MS, the willingness for the Democrats to grant citizenship to millions of illegals in order to gain votes (worst example of Hispandering ever seen), the supposed superiority of the left, etc..

If Sherman were alive today

He'd be lynched by a bunch of FR hard core Confederate supporters.

Hell, Lincoln is the devil to many on this site.
