The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which typically handles just one aircraft carrier at a time, will be home to three carriers at once this fall, said Navy Capt. Joseph Campbell, the yard's commanding officer.
The three carriers make up one-quarter of the nation's flattop fleet and are scheduled to be in the yard simultaneously for several weeks.
The USS Harry S. Truman arrived at the yard Jan. 9. It will be joined by the USS Theodore Roosevelt in September and the USS George Washington in October. The Truman is scheduled to depart in November.

That doesn't sound very prudent to be doing during wartime. Unless of course they getting ready for a bigger one, say for, Iran.

I'd love to see those three flattops together. The sight of all that American steel in one place would be an awesome sight. Still, it isn't prudent to have that many expensive eggs in one basket. Too much risk of something going wrong.

No kidding, it is a zoo there with only one carrier. I Can't imagine what it will be like. Glad I don't have to deal with that mess.
On the plus side maybe and hopefully the Navy learned from past mistakes for not having needed yard times during the first Gulf War. The only other permanent carrier port on the east coast is Mayport, Florida and I think it is a one carrier pier from what I remember.
These sound like the needed three month down times between deployments ships require. A carrier maintenance cycle is a one year overhaul every 5 years plus a three month yard period after each 6 month cruise. It takes from the yard to a deployment about 6 months of work ups for training before the six month deployment.

Yep in 80 they had two one was us and we were in the drydock. Portsmouth is not a fun place from the times I remember. That's why during overhaul I rented a place with a Bosun in Oceanview.

Last time I was in San Diego, there were two carrier in port. I suspect that this is not all that unusual an event.
Have you ever been to Norfolk? If you have you know the concerns and it isn't just the carriers. It's a logistical nightmare land defense wise. Think about this and this doesn't violate loose lips policies. Straight across the river from Norfolk is the sole ship building company in the United States left that is capable of producing even a conventional aircraft carrier.

If my count is correct, that would mean that the Eisenhower and the Kennedy would be the only two ships available for the Atlantic and Med.
Except, wasn't the Kennedy tagged for early retirement before then? Will it even be in service at that point?

That is exactly correct. Nevertheless, a nuke going off near would not only cause horrendous civilian casualties but take out 3 carrier battle groups. On the surface, it sure is a risk we, for example, wouldn't have taken during cold war.
On the other hand, this implies to me that they don't consider terrorst threat high enough to be concerned about the carriers. I'm sure the bigger problem is how to entertain all the crews.
If the terrorists had a nuke they'd have used it by now.

They have them ready although to tear the fleet up and then do what I posted up above.
It is a private salvage Company not the US Military that will be scrapping the fleet out.
San Diego regularly has two CV's tied up at Coranado Island naval base - and I think I have seen three at one time on occasion.

That is insanity. Neat picture but someone needs their seat kicked for such stupidity. By the picture you show that would make 6 likely 7 carriers all in strike range of each other. Folks that right there is one of the reasons we got hit on 9/11. No I'm not blaming the Navy for the terrorist deeds but that is not a show of force that is a show of arrogance and stupidity berthing carriers like that. The stars in the Pentagon who approved this needed relieved of duty. I see it was Clinton's watch when it happened. 25 years ago you could not have put but three carriers at NOB Norfolk period. Pier 12 & one side of pier 7 was it. But here's the real irony to it. We had more ships in 1980 than now.
Any Schmuck with a car can see all this information from the interstate. It's no secret. It was no secret in the Cold War as to what carriers were in port you could drive by and count for yourself. The main thing was to not bring them all in at one time and say nanna nanna boo boo to crack pots that may see opportunity in it.

true, but withholding it from the news, you'd only have to worry about 'local' crack-pots, not a sudden surge of them.
Nope it's got plenty of foreign nationals also. About 2 miles or less up the river are the International Commerical Piers. The ones foreign nations like to pull into and their crews walk away.
If I was a science fiction writer, I'd make up something crazy about all those carriers getting some new high-tech nuclear powered upgrade that would let each of them defend a very lare area from incoming missiles.
Doggone it, that whole "loose lips" thing is so frustrating sometimes!
well all we can hope for then is that they will have lots, and lots of security.
