The victory laps for Sam Alito
The Washington Times ^ | 1-24-06 | Wes Pruden

Posted on 01/24/2006 12:00:55 PM PST by JZelle

Sam Alito gets his first of two votes today, by the Senate Judiciary Committee to be followed later this week by the full Senate, and Mr. Alito can be excused if he thinks of these as his victory laps. The Democrats have not given up; somewhere in a basement in Washington aides are concocting further horror stories for their bosses to spring on the public today, tomorrow or the next day.

I hear Alito crashed his car into a canal and left a girl inside to drown while he covered his behind to maintain his politcal viability.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they came up with some lame accussation that needed a "complete investigation" or soemthing along those lines.

Great article from Pruden, as always. His bottom line is that the dems think they're "mainstream" and anyone to the right of them is "out of the mainstream," but you can't be the "mainstream" when you're in the minority. Funny the dems haven't figured that out.

I heard he had a "waitress sandwich" with some Senator somewhere in D.C.

I hope the judge takes his spot on the bench before the President's State of the Union.

It'll be awesome to see his face on the front row with the other justices.

That'll be the worst medicine in the world for the lefties.

A clue as to what they are planning might be drawn by Leahy's hot attack today that Alito would OK secret wire tapping and that Congress had never been appraised of such when they voted to approve armed conflict in Afghanistan.

This was a laughable accusation coming from Leaky Leahy who is one of the reasons the Administration has to move in secret because Leahy blabs war plans to the press.

Never mind that I heard nothing in the hearings before the committee that indicated that Alito was in favor of this. The Dems seem to be switching their plan of attack, probably in the face of the American public's obvious distaste for further discussion of the abortion issue -- particularly the youth who oppose Roe overwhelmingly. (Their attacks are no longer working!)

Well, then. I guess he's out of public life for good.

Who knows what the Dems have in store. I wouldn't be surprised to see them draw the vote out in the full senate. Nevertheless, Alito is going to make it.

I must say I'm disappointed, but not surprised, at the Dems. I hope the Republicans keep these hearings in mind next time a Democrat president nominates someone (hopefully not for a long time to come). At least the Dems are finally out in the open. They really care little for the rule of law and prefer judges who act like legislators. Again, not surprising at all.

The best revenge is when GOP Senators next time ding an otherwise qualified liberal nominee on nothing more than politics ; )

To be honest, I didn't think that a moderate to conservative judge like Alito would be able to get through the Judiciary committee this easily. I thought we'd see more of the same things we saw when Bolton was nominated for UN Ambassador.

Maybe this means the RINOs are starting to learn that they haven't been representing the people who put them in office very well, and are starting to fear the consequences.

Wash your mouth out with soap. The best revenge is when the Democrats don't get to nominate a nominee in the first place.

I'm not happy counting chickens until the Senate vote is a done deal. Until then the possibility of a filibuster remains . . . tempered by the threat that Bush might withdraw Alito and name Janice Rodgers Brown. If there is not gonna be a vote, might as well not have a vote over a black conservative nominee . . .

Well, I didn't say HOW SOON a liberal nominee might come before the Committee - it could be (God willing) HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of years from now - then those good, patriotic Republicans will have this Congressional Record and precedent to ding said judge at that time ; )

That's all? Damn, I heard that he stole a bunch of FBI files...oh, sorry, they "mysteriously appeared in his office". And I didn't realize this...his spouse tends to be emotional, with a penchant for faux tears at memorial services.

(You have FReepmail...or you will, when I type it)

Apparently Jon Kyl made the same point as you, this morning during his statement time. I'll see if I can find the statement later.

Re: my earlier post to you, about Jon Kyl. This is from the A-hole Press (AP) article, about Alito going to a floor vote:

Sen. Jon Kyl (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz., warned that Republicans would remember a party-line Alito vote in future Supreme Court nominations, considering several Republicans voted for Justices Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who were nominated by President Clinton.

And it was more than just "several" Republicans for both of Clintoon's nominees...only three people total voted against Ginsburg, and only nine total voted against Breyer.

"It is simply unrealistic to think that one party would put itself at a disadvantage by eschewing political considerations while the other party almost unanimously applies such considerations," Kyl said. "So I say to my Democratic friends: Think carefully about what is being done today. Its impact will be felt well beyond this particular nominee."

Of course, as someone else suggested, we don't have to get to that point if we don't elect another socialist Marxist in progressive's clothing (also known as a Dimocrat) who would get to make such a nomination.

And if they do, but we still have the Senate, it's simple. If they are "qualified", vote the person out of committee. No holds. Hold a cloture vote. No filibusters. This will allow for a fair up or down vote. Then kill the nomination. Fairly.

Just out of curiosity, if Alito DID measure up to the lofty ideal that Dems hold for O'Connor, would they ever apologize for being jerks to Bush and Alito?

While we're on the subject of chastising the Dems for their disregard for Judge Alito, there is one Democrat I would like to acknowledge today - PA Governor Ed Rendell.

For the last few months Governor Rendell (whose wife sits on the 3rd Circuit with Judge Alito) has stayed quiet. After the antics of most of his fellow Democrats, it is nice to see there's some D's who are willing to recognize Judge Alito's judicial fairness, integrity, legal record and superior academic background.

Thanks for being on the 'right' side for once Ed!

Well, he is up for re-election this fall (possibly against Lynn Swann), and perhaps he's trying to make people forget his efforts to bar the military vote in Pennsylvania in 2004.

Anyway, you are right, credit where credit is due. I just get a little cynical when someone who is consistently on the "wrong" side decides to try and get it right all of a sudden (i.e. the Democrats' support for the Iraq War Resolution in 2002, and their running away from it ever since)
