The White House congratulated Canada's Conservative Party and its leader, Stephen Harper, on their election victory and promised to bolster bilateral relations.
"We congratulate the Conservative Party and Stephen Harper on their victory," said Scott McClellan, chief spokesman for US President George W. Bush.
"The United States and Canada have a strong and bilateral relationship, and we look forward to strengthening our relations and working with the new government," said McClellan.
Harper's party has promised a crackdown on government corruption after chasing the scandal-plagued Liberals from power after 12 years in Monday's election, which saw the conservatives fall short of an overall majority.
Bush was expected to place a congratulatory telephone call to Harper soon, said McClellan.

Controversial American documentary filmmaker Michael Moore bemoaned an apparent right turn by liberal northern neighbor Canada in its upcoming general election.
"Oh, Canada -- you're not really going to elect a Conservative majority on Monday, are you? That's a joke, right? I know you have a great sense of humor, ... but this is no longer funny," Moore complained in a commentary on his website.
"First, you have the courage to stand against the war in Iraq -- and then you elect a prime minister who's for it. You declare gay people have equal rights -- and then you elect a man who says they don't," Moore moaned.
Conservatives led by Stephen Harper were ahead of Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberals by a comfortable 10 to 12 points, polls showed Saturday, two days before Canadians go to the polls.
In "Bowling for Columbine," his documentary on gun violence in the United States, Moore heads north to Canada to flee the rise of conservatism on US soil.
"A man running the nation to the south of you is hoping you can lend him a hand by picking Stephen Harper, because he's a man who shares his world view. Do you want to help George Bush by turning Canada into his latest conquest?" Moore asked.
"Far be it from me, as an American, to suggest what you should do," he added. "I hope you don't feel this appeal of mine is too intrusive, but I just couldn't sit by, as your friend, and say nothing."

LOL! He "Weighs in".

'US filmmaker Michael Moore weighs in on Canada's election'
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 15, 2004
Formal Complaint Filed Against Moore
Maximum Penalty Sought
GUELPH/TORONTO Today, the Ontario Campus Conservatives filed an official complaint and legal brief with Elections Canada detailing Michael Moores violations of the Canada Elections Act and requesting that Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley commence a prosecution under the Act and seek the maximum penalty. The first of its nature in Canada, this matter has recently attained national media attention.
Calgary lawyer Jonathan Denis filed the complaint on behalf of the group together with a legal brief. Our submissions clearly outline the applicable sections of the Canada Elections Act and Mr. Moores direct violation of the law. It is now in the hands of Elections Canada to act accordingly.
Locally, Harrison Ruess, President of the University of Guelph Conservative Association, was pleased to hear that the complaint was formally filed:
Now this issue must be taken seriously by Elections Canada. The law was clearly broken, so this should lead to Moore being formally charged.
Our society is based on law and order, and for the system to work laws must be enforced.
So far over 2200 people have signed the petition at www.chargemoore.com.
More information can be found on the Guelph Campus Conservatives website.

Congratulations to Canadian FRiends. Good work.
Just a little bit of blue left to go but a Red Canada sure looks good!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE'RE BACK BABY!!!!!
And now, I must change my screen name. This is a first step, but we've come so far in so little time. God Bless Canada and America!!!!! We love you!!
#6 - Sweet!
"Proud Canadian"? "Happy Canadian"?
To be accurate, you'd do better to make a red-blue map of North America on the basis of Congressional District or "riding."
(....I swiped the word "hottie" from our freeper guys. Equal rights, ya know).
Leni
Canadian Neo Con?
Not only did Moore Weigh-In. His prior antics and lies have apparently "tipped the scale" to Conservative rule.
He's a great guy! I love my new Prime Minister!!!!
In Canada blue = Conservative, but I knew what you meant.
I never liked "Neocon". It sounds too "liberal revolutionary".
Maybe, "Proud Canadian Conservative"?
Vancouver would be blue, rural BC would be red.
Liberals solid in Toronto = blue
Results suggest rift between urban, rural voters

Wonderful! The world is turning Conservative! And beating back the 'liberal hoards'.
Ha! Libs on both sides of the border are so mad they could spit!
Thanks. Now THAT is a beautiful North American continent.
(((.)))
Thanks Friends. My new name is under consideration. Living in the leftist cesspool of Southern Ontario, you should see the lefties both on television and in the streets. They are in utter shock. They cannot believe their new leader is Conservative and Toronto is now effectively isolated from Government.
What really is getting to them is his good will towards President Bush.
Actually, I've often wondered who was it that designated conservative counties to be red? I think it was the MSM during the 2000 election. Can anyone confirm?
Canada Ping!
Please FReepmail me to get on or off this Canada ping list.
Don't know. Up until a couple of years ago, I thought Republicans were blue too .
That's correct. Northern Ontario is also blue (kinda like the Upper Midwest) and the Atlantic is mostly blue as well.
Quebec is a teal-red-blue mixture.
I just love him too!! And I can honestly say I DESPISE that creep Buzz Hargrove. He's a real trouble maker. A pathetic man with no moral compass. He and Martin should fit easily into the same pod!!
Stephen will WIN OVER many others now that he's been given the chance.
I'm a born and raised B.C. girl. Vancouver is a city that has been RUINED. It now has MORE immigrants than Canadians and that really changes things. It's a different city than I remember that's for sure. I'm glad that I live in the Southern Interior which is not only beautiful but CONSERVATIVE.
I was born in Sydney BC, I lived on Vancouver Island for 24 years... I just turned 30...
I'd say a lot of the liberalism started with the draft dodgers, followed by the "Socialized" immigration. I call this the "Soft Cold War", where old guards planted the seeds of socialism in the the young guard then set them free to leave, that way they "kill with kindness" and sow the seeds of socialism.
Canada has continually been sown with those seeds...
Northern Ontario is sparsely populated as well...union-dominant.
I think you're right on that one.

How sad! I flew into Vancouver and skied Whistler/Blackcomb 3 years ago and was completely taken aback by the anti-American sentiment there. Fortunately it was on my list of ski destinations and having now been there and done that, there is no chance I will ever return.........
FWIW, the scenery in Vancouver and along the coastline north is absolutely breathtaking!
Yes, I'm sure that's part of it too. But you should see Vancouver now. It's more and more difficult to find white faces, I kid you not.
I'm not against all the immigrants, lots of the Asians are very hardworking and constructive. Many obtain University educations and become professionals. But they always bring, Mom, Dad, Gramma, Grampa, Auntie, Uncle......., those are the ones that are so easily swayed by promises of multiculturalism, special rights for "your culture", on and on it goes. Pretty soon, WE are the minority.
PS - Vancouver Island is a really beautiful place, Victoria in particular. But it has become quite Liberal also. University city I guess.
"Don't know. Up until a couple of years ago, I thought Republicans were blue too ."
We should be any color we want. Why should the liberal media have any say... let them label their own kind.
BTW, it will be nice not hearing all the anti-American crap. Peace until their next election.
If you were to come into the interior (Okanagan Valley) Kelowna specifically, you would find NO anti-americanism. I NEVER hear that kind of talk. That is just so disheartening to hear. When I went through my nurses training at Vancouver General, I recall meeting a few draft dodgers. I doubt they stayed in Canada but they had arrived for a time. The visitors or tourists, were just so warmly welcomed. I HATE this crap. It started with the Trudeau years and the subsequent hard core liberals that have followed in his path. Liberalism is destructive. It divides, it thrives on strife, it's UGLY!!
Heck, everyone else is making suggestions, I might as well throw mine in the hat...
How about...Tentatively Optimistic Canadian
;~)
