Sen. John Kerry (D.-Mass.) is traveling in Davos, Switzerland, but that didnt stop him from launching what conservatives are calling an international filibuster against Samuel Alito.
As CNN reported Kerrys plans to filibuster Alitos confirmation to the Supreme Court, the liberal People For the American Way reacted with glee to the news. Kerrys cohort from Massachusetts, Sen. Teddy Kennedy, also offered encouragement.
Was it a coincidence?
At 5:31 p.m., the National Abortion Federation (the professional association of abortion practitioners) released the following statement:
"Today, the National Abortion Federation calls on Senators to use the filibuster to stop the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito because of his extreme views on the right to privacy and Roe v. Wade. We don't take this step lightly. In our 29 year history, NAF has never advocated for the filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee, but these are extraordinary circumstances. Now that the Senate leadership has publicly announced 51 votes in favor of confirming Alito, we must urge Senators who care about preserving women's reproductive freedom to use the filibuster to stop Alito's elevation to the Supreme Court."
At 5:52 p.m., Kennedys office mailed the following statement to reporters:
"Other than voting to send our men and women to war, there is no more important vote in the Senate than our vote on a Supreme Court nominee. This is a vote of a generation and a test of conscience. Judge Alito does not share the values of equality and justice that make this country strong. He does not deserve a place on the highest court of the land.
"We owe it to future generations of Americans to oppose this nomination. If Judge Alito is confirmed, he will serve on the court long after President Bush leaves office, and the progress of half a century on the basic rights of all Americans is likely to be rolled back. Hes the wrong Justice for justice and the rule of law in America."
Then, at 5:53 p.m., merely a minute later, this release arrived from People For the American Way:
Senator John Kerry has called for a filibuster of the Alito nomination, heeding your calls to do everything possible to defeat it. He has asked that activists now help convince his colleagues to join him.
Please contact key senators who can provide critical support to the filibuster effort!
Then forward this email to anyone you know who is worried that Alito would likely condone the abuse of power by the president, vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, and help curtail Congress' ability to protect the civil rights, health, safety, and welfare of the American people.
We need to act now to prevent Senate Republican leaders from ramming this nomination through the Senate -- time is of the essence.
I dont have foggiest idea if this is a vast left-wing conspiracy, mysteriously orchestrated by Kerry as he snowboards in Davos.
But the sudden embrace of Kerrys action by the pro-abortion professionals' group, the liberal People For the American Way and Teddy "Windbag" Kennedy seems to suggest this idea was at least floated (and probably well scripted) amongst some of the countrys top left-wing decision makers.
As Sen. George Allen (R.-Va.) so eloquently said today: Senator Kerry must be feeling lucky because he wants to make my day.
So, do you feel lucky, punk?
What a total goose!
an international filibuster against Samuel Alito --- ???????I guess the French will vote against Alito!
"Other than voting to send our men and women to war, there is no more important vote in the Senate than our vote on a Supreme Court nominee...."So does that mean le Jean Kerry will vote against Alito before he votes against him?
Wonder if this is a "lobbying" trip and who is paying for his trip?
whoops, i made an against/for mistake
THat's what I want to know!
the trip's not for him, it's for his family
he's in a race with algore for who can be most stupid
hard to say who will win
QUOTE "We need to act now to prevent Senate Republican leaders from ramming this nomination through the Senate."
So the President's proposal of Judge Alito, followed by the gruesome hearings, the committee vote, debate in Congress and an up-or-down-vote in accordance with all the rules is "ramming"?
The action is pure political grandstanding for the freak show on the far left. This is just contemptible.
Sit down, John. And shut up.
That way, when they are up for reelection, they can claim they fought for their left base, when all they did was embarrass themselves.
This was Mr. Mew's take, that Kerry was sucking up to the left. Might help him in the primaries, I suppose, but he just looks like a maroon to the red bits.
Correction. He takes his cues from the loony bin.
And the difference is...?
JFKerry is in a hurry to get home.......
The Irish can consider themselves blessed!
Spin 'em up, Boys!
I think they've disowned him.
I'm of Irish heritage, and I certainly have!!!
"Kerry Takes His Cues From Left Wing"
- And all this time I thought that he took his cues from the communist manefesto and the Mein Kempf.
I think he was french before he was Irish. No way an Irishman could have a nose like that.
Insert key and turn on "THREE".
Nuke time for the phony gentleman's filibuster! Yippee!
I thought that is where all left wingers were from.
"No way an Irishman could have a nose like that".
Only if he is related to Seabiscuit!
"but he needs to get Theresa's permission before he can leave."
I bet she welded a pair of vice grips to his cahones when they married. Oh wait, he doesn't have any!
Democrats-please nominate Kerry again. Please
What the hell are these "many, many good Catholics in Massachusetts" doing?
"Mr. Kerry goes to Davos"
I wish he'd bloody stay there! (No offense meant to the good residents of Davos...)
frenchie is just sucking up to the scumbags in the left who have bought him. Even he knows there will be no filibuster but he is trying to get on the sheet for being for a filibuster. What a man!
He should drink a whole pitcher of ice tea. It worked for Gore.
The problem is the "many, many good Catholics" continue to vote for these two unbelievable disgraces in election after election.
Isn't it cruel for the Democrats to keep Sandra Day O'Connor from tending to her ailing husband? All in the name of politics? Those people have no shame, all sociopaths, every one of them!
So Judge Alito didn't pass the global test?
Yes this is the democrats idea of Ramming. Mr. Alito should have been voted on in November at the latest and we are just getting to it.
Remember we watched Clinton play with Saddam for 8 years and we watched Islamics kill 3,000 people before President Bush rammed thru the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Something Ted Kennedy doesn't have an ounce of.
It ain't gonna happen, John-boy. Acting like you think it will just makes you look as deluded as, well, as Al Gore.
Now, if you want to provide us all with something worth watching, go bitch slap Hillary or something. I'd watch that.
International filibuster is a great name for what is going on.
Chicken John Kerry, safely hobnobbing and networking, overseas in Davos, called for a filibuster even though he didn't deign to sit in on the debates thus far. He'll deny his colleagues in the Senate the right to vote after they showed they cared enough to listen to debates by their Senators.
Kerry can't even take heat
Thus..he won't park his butt in his seat
In the great US Senate.
He's an absentee tenant.
Bay Staters should vote his defeat.
whoops, i made an against/for mistake
that's ok, just don't let it happen again :)
"John Kerry is not Irish. As has been widely reported, John Kerry's grandfather, the devout Catholic Franklin Kerry, grew up in central Europe as the Jewish Fritz Kohn, changing his name before immigrating to the U.S. in 1905. Kerry's mother is part of a wealthy Massachusetts family that traces its English roots back to the founding of the Bay State"
I hope they burn cars in Boston.
As the former state senate President William Bulger used to say that John Kerry was only Irish every 6 years.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
"John Kerry is not Irish. As has been widely reported, John Kerry's grandfather, the devout Catholic Franklin Kerry, ....."
I know, I just could not resist asking the question, him ducking out on the Irish reminded me of his lost identity.
