My brother was stationed at Wainwright for 3 years. -19.2 degrees doesn't sound all that scary, since -40 is so common. I visited him at Thanksgiving once and it was -6 and they were talking about how warm it was.

Well I guess this is good news to all those polar bears whose floating ice was being melted by global warming.

The dog has learned a new word. When I say cold he growls at me like it is my fault.

We've been mild in OH too. In fact we're on track for the warmest January ever. We've averaged highs in the mid 40s this month which is more like what we get in early March.

When this gets to Canada it will have chilled a little more. 60 below coming to Yellowknife and Portage la Prairie. They are ready, though.

"What is ice fog?"

Ice fog is a cloud of microscopic ice crystals that are too light to settle quickly out of the air. They form when exhaust moisture from car engines, aircraft engines, or other vapor sources encounter extremely low air temperatures.

As a pilot, landing on an airfield in Alaska at 30-60 degrees below, the ice fog will be thick within 40 feet of the ground, and you experience complete whiteout just as you round out for touchdown. Very exciting.

Also, taxiing back to the hangar is a challenge since you can't see the markings on the taxiways or the lights on the side. Often the people in the tower, who are above the fog, give directions to the aircraft crew.

What is ice fog? Is it something you can actually feel?

In an episode of "Scooby Doo" Shaggy, while suffering scooby snack withdrawals, cuts out a section of a fog bank and eats it.

"What is ice fog?"

My impression is that it is "hoarfrost" (spelling may vary)
In Tennessee, it was normal in the mountains, but rare in the low elevations.
It is fog that freezes.
Here in Bratislava this week, there were three mornings
of heavy hoarfrost on all trees and vegetation. It is quite nice to see.

Sort of shoots holes in the lefty global-warming Bush-bash, doesn't it? Here's an excerpt from a essay on Michael Crichton's web site, regarding his wonderful novel, State of Fear, which questions the Global Warming theory and illustrates the "politicization of science": ________________________________
[Essay introduction - discusses the horrors of the Holocaust caused by hysteria over the new scientific breakthough of the 30s - eugenics; then he refers to the Global Warming theory:]

"Now we are engaged in a great new theory that once again has drawn the support of politicians, scientists, and celebrities around the world. Once again, the theory is promoted by major foundations. Once again, the research is carried out at prestigious universities. Once again, legislation is passed and social programs are urged in its name. Once again, critics are few and harshly dealt with.

"Once again, the measures being urged have little basis in fact or science. Once again, groups with other agendas are hiding behind a movement that appears high-minded. Once again, claims of moral superiority are used to justify extreme actions. Once again, the fact that some people are hurt is shrugged off because an abstract cause is said to be greater than any human consequences. Once again, vague terms like sustainability and generational justice - terms that have no agreed definition - are employed in the service of a new crisis.

"I am not arguing that global warming is the same as eugenics. But the similarities are not superficial. And I do claim that open and frank discussion of the data, and of the issues, is being suppressed. Leading scientific journals have taken strong editorial positions of the side of global warming, which, I argue, they have no business doing. Under the circumstances, any scientist who has doubts understands clearly that they will be wise to mute their expression.

"One proof of this suppression is the fact that so many of the outspoken critics of global warming are retired professors. These individuals are not longer seeking grants, and no longer have to face colleagues whose grant applications and career advancement may be jeopardized by their criticisms...."

Here in Denver we have had a month of below records temps and then a month of above record temps. I think we have a schizophrenic planet trying to confuse the liberal eco-terrorists.

EnvironMENTALists really and truly see human beings as a plague similar to the runaway mouse population that hapens every so often in Australia. Their unwritten agenda is to make sure more people die in order to "save the earth". Whether by starvation or by disease, they don't particularly care.
