DHS unveils massive, fast-track border project
Government Computer News ^ | 01/26/06 | Wilson P. Dizard III

The Homeland Security Department today took the wraps off its ambitious plan to quickly gain control of the U.S. northern and southern borders by hiring a systems integration contract team to carry out the Secure Border Initiative (SBI).

DHS plans to request proposals in March and award a contract by Sept. 30 to deploy new technology as part of a comprehensive overhaul of security between ports of entry along the land borders.

SBI.net replaces the America’s Shield Initiative (ASI), the Border Patrol’s more limited and now canceled plan to modernize the sensor networks along the borders. The fiscal 2006 budget includes $31 million for ASI, but plans that DHS officials announced today at the SBI.net industry day strongly suggested that the new project would cost much more.

Homeland Security deputy secretary Michael P. Jackson told an audience of hundreds of vendor representatives and federal employees gathered at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington that secretary Michael Chertoff has tagged SBI as “ one of most important public policy priorities.”

I'm impressed. I didn't expect Jerkoff Chertoff to get around to publishing the first draft of his border security plan until sometime in 2009.

Maybe he doesn't like being compared to Bagdad Bob.

Too little

I agree. All this technology would be a nice compliment for a real security fence. But without the fence, it is just a waste of money designed to make it look like Bush cares about securing the border when in fact he is doing everything in his power to keep the cheap labor flowing.

Gee...instead of spending all this Tax Money on "studies", how about simply BUILDING the FRICKIN' WALL!

Create choke points that channell the illegals into an area that the BP/ICE can simply stake out and wait for them to just walk in to be apprehended!

But Nooooooo....Jorge Arbusto is hell-bent on finishing off the American Dream for Americans, and creating an OBL zone from the arctic to the equator!

It's quite obvious this administration's "plan" for regaining control of the borders is to open them up entirely. They will however pretend they're getting serious just long enough until they can get favorable legislation passed like a massive guest worker program.

The department will draw on the efforts of 11,000 Border Patrol personnel, as well as other DHS staff, to stem the tide of illegal crossings

Golly gee gosh, shouldn't this have been done on 9/12/01??

Of course there's not a word to address the HUGE problem of the 16? million invaders who are already here, sucking the life out of American social services, schools and medical facilities...

A fence isn't much good without more border patrol able (and allowed) to respond to prevent crossings. Put up all the barbed wire, chain link fences, pits and cameras you want - it can still be crossed if you don't have people there to stop it.

Even the impressive walls in post #5 can be climbed in under a minute with a ladder.

lol that was my thought as well.

A fence isn't much good without more border patrol

You won't get much argument from me about that. I'm all for doubling the number of guards or whatever it takes.

But a fence would make our existing Border Patrol far more effective because rather than patrolling a border 2000 miles long and 20 miles deep (40,000 square miles) they would be able to focus there efforts on the fence. They would be patrolling a line that was 2000 miles long and only 50 feet deep (about 20 square miles). The same 10,000 agents would be deployed much more densely because they would not need to spread out all over and deep into the desert on our side of the border. Further, the fence would discourage many of the would be illegals from even trying to cross the border. The less people trying to cross, the easier the job would become.

Everybody knows that a fence would work and that is why Vincete Fox and the US Chamber of Commerce and President Bush are so desperate to avoid building it. They don't want anything to interrupt the flow of cheap labor.

It's sad to say but there's not going to be anymore words on what to do with illegals currently here, it's already understood they'll get to stay for 3 to 6 years. Then of course we'll make them go home when their time is up just like we do now.

One would think that Ft. Huachuka(sp?) could launch drones and/or blimps along the border with cameras, and possibly self protection arms, to monitor the border and give practical experience to the military at the same time. Some time ago they flew blimps over the AZ border. Seems that some were shot at/down hence the need for self protection!! But that would be a faster start.

After the illegals are detained, instead of releasing them why for goodness sake are we not incarcerating them in a large barbed wire/razor wire enclosure where they can be useful. Joe Apiro in Maricopa County, AZ could show us how to build this...he uses surplus US Army tents for the excess jail prisoners and donated food supplies...feeds them on less than 50 cents a day. 'Course, some of the food is green baloney. The prisoners are issued pink underwear; would we issue illegals aqua undies?

After they (the illegals) serve xx days helping build a wall, clearing the land for a clear view, then they probably earned returning to their homeland.

Typical DC hacks in action.

Is this pipe dream even funded (other than the $31 million which, per DHS, won't be enough)?

The obvious solution is to build a serious fence such as the Israeli one and have the Border Patrol respond to all intrusions. Fast response would be the key. 10,000 US troops plus the present day Border Patrol plus a serious fence would shut down the drug flow from Mexico and illegal alien entries

This fence will have high mounted cameras to see into Mexico and motion sensors

Click to see other threads related to illegal aliens in America
Click to FR-mail me for addition or removal

Sounds like someone has been lurking on FR:

DHS plans to launch a Web site for SBI.net and post a transcript of the industry day presentations there. Officials said the department would release details about the Web site on the fedbizopps.gov Web site Jan. 30. You can bet we'll be posting this news on FR...HJ

Giddens, who joined the SBI.net project from a previous assignment in the Coast Guard, said, “This is a signature effort for the department.” He emphasized the need to take a systems approach to the SBI.net project, and said that it would include several aspects, such as ending the “catch and release” approach to illegal border crossers, deterring cross-border crimes, strengthening employer compliance programs, removing incarcerated aliens and bolstering interior enforcement.

Only problem I see is the lack of a wall. We'll see how the Industry Day presentations look...

I really believe the states need to take bolder actions since the federal government continues to fail us. States should build fences and create border police(like here in CA is trying to do) whether or not DHS likes it. If DHS doesn't like it, fine, they can fight with the states and be completely embrassed when the media and blogs expose their incompetence.
