C'mon, stop looking at the money and look at the seismic chart! ;^)

Flank collapses are rather rare as a percentage of the total eruptions of Augustine, and there's some dispute of how big the local tsunami that supposedly hit Homer in the late 1800s was.

So much for controlling greenhouse gases. What's the equivalent in mega-SUV's?

I can see this is a futile effort, but I'll try again;

1) While volcanoes do emit Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas, they also emit Sulfur Dioxide, a very efficient aerosol that BLOCKS sunlight, and more than counteracts the warming effect of the CO2 emitted, overall causing global COOLING; the bigger the eruption the more this effect.

It seems to me the cooling effects of volcanoes are pretty well documented, the "Year Without a Summer" after the eruption of Tambora is something well known, so I'm still mystified why people persist in making moronic and tired jokes about volcanoes causing global warming.

2) People seem to find this very hard to believe but collectively, humans (cars, factories, power plants) put over 150 times more CO2 in the air per year than EVERY volcano on earth COMBINED per year.

Don't cancel travel plans as this volcano will most likely go back to sleep in a couple of days and stay quiet for years.

I am planning a trip to Fairbanks this weekend specifically for some aurora watching. I'm not sure which way the ash cloud has been moving. Do you think it will interfere with my viewing?
