The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.
Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."
The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.
George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."
Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.
...Art reflects life.......life reflects Art.....
I can't wait to not watch the Oscar telecast.
The biggest laugh line of the year will be when the Academy issues its requisite "Please do not make political comments during your speech" directive.
They just won't stop will they? Queers nominating queers.
I can already see the headlines now -
"Ratings for Academy Awards dip to an all time low."
Sigh....Krauthammer obviously was right...he said that about 18 people have seen buttcrack mountain, but they were the right people.....
Sick Sick Society Award To Hollyweird!
Oscar ping
It's just sick - another reason we homeschool.
Good grief. They pick Oscar nominations based on how poorly a movie did now? Those are all flops, except Brokeback Mountain...though with its huge advertising budget and every queer movie reviewer penning erection laden reviews, it should have made 150 million by now.
Queer shepherds? George Clooney? Good grief, what a toilet.
Does anyone know if we've ever had it happen before?...where you have both BEST ACTOR and ACTRESS nominees, but the film doesn't get a BEST PICTURE nomination..?
That says it all. Cowboys will never seem the same to me again.
"Best use of pudding in a western"
Good for you, I have 3 year old twins and at 53 I don't have the energy to home school but I sure as hell will be watching what they get taught!
Looks like a lot of "cowboys and cowgirls" comin to
Chi- town!

8,000 already signed up for Gay Games in July
January 31, 2006
CHICAGO AREA -- More than 8,000 participants, from more than 30 nations, have signed up to attend the Gay Games events scheduled for July in the Chicago area, organizers said Monday.
"Our registration rates to date are ahead of expectations, and we may exceed our forecast of 12,000 participating athletes and artists," Brian McGuinness, the Games' executive director, said Monday in a news release.
The last Gay Games, in 2002 in Sydney, had 11,000 participants, organizers said.
Officials said some sports, such as sailing, are already closed for registration because they have reached capacity, and golf and ice hockey are nearly full.
Information about participating in the July 15 to July 22 events can be found at www.gaygameschicago.org.
Disgusting. It was ok when Hollywood was about naked women, but this is just sick.
at the same time I'm sure a buttload (ha!) of FReepers will be willing to trash the flick not having seen it
"Best Same Sex Love Scene in A Major Motion Picture"....
Walk the Line was a great movie.
I hope Barebutt Mountin sweeps the Oscars. Put the Hollywierd agenda right out there for America to see. I bet America says "I CAN QUIT YOU!"
Like this was truly a suprise? Hollywood is a complete toilet.
I have no doubt that if a movie about gay cowboys gets 8 nominations, if I wrote one about gay soldiers I'd get twice that number.
Just one more reason to ignore Hollywood. Not that we really needed another one....
I wonder if there will be any "fisting" events.
If I were programming one of the other networks, I'd put a John Wayne movie opposite the Oscar telecast this year and bury it in the ratings .
Very predictable nominations except for Walk The Line getting shafted. Brokeback Mountain must've missed one of the Tech categories that most were predicting for it (9 nominations was the most common line). I'm guessing Art Direction but maybe Original Score, because that's a very cliquish group that almost never has a first-time nominee.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman better get Best Actor or the whole thing is rigged.
My favorite cowboy, Ben Johnson, is spinning in his grave.
> Krauthammer obviously was right...he said that about 18 people have seen buttcrack mountain, but they were the right people.....
I was going to say the same thing. Who actually *has* seen this movie? The Michael Moore crowd? The metrosexuals?
DAMN good idea!
Walk The Line didn't even get nominated for best movie, and Russell Crowe was snubbed again. He's no more of a jerk than the rest of them, and a better actor than most. And the Johnny Cash movie is at least as good as "Ray".
Was Jake the... how is it put? The... passive partner in the love affair?
Just like hollywood. Give second prize to the "woman."
Sorry - the "previous" thread got pulled as duplicate.
That guy is probably famous somewhere by now!!!
so we have not only a far left hollyweird we now have hollyweird pushing butsex, terrorist, pro-commie movies.
So which advertisers are going to be STUPID enough to advertise on the homosexual oscars?
Ford would be SUPER-STUPID to advertise on that show.
"Capote" was playing in a couple of theaters in the DC area when it was released. Now it's in many theaters. It's being discovered for what it is - excellent.
Also, these people do not understand that...when they push the envelope so blatantly far...further destroying the credibility of the Motion Picture Academy...even independents who care little about the gay issue...start to say "now wait a minute!"
The blatancy of this blows my mind. Why don't they just rename it the Gay Academy Awards and get it over with?
These people all want Brokeback to be up there with Casablanca and Gone with the Wind.
I didn't have to watch "Debbie Does Dallas" to comment on its moral character either.
That seals it. I'll watch reruns of Gilligan's Island before I watch the Academy Awards.
Thank you very little...
