'Brokeback Mountain' Gets 8 Oscar Nominations'

The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.

Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."

The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.

George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.

Does anyone know if we've ever had it happen before?...where you have both BEST ACTOR and ACTRESS nominees, but the film doesn't get a BEST PICTURE nomination..?

Walk the Line was a great movie.

The marginalization of Hollywierd continues.

I hope Barebutt Mountin sweeps the Oscars. Put the Hollywierd agenda right out there for America to see. I bet America says "I CAN QUIT YOU!"

LOL, Hollywood perversions on display.

These commie-vampires suck the lifeblood out of everything good and decent.

I have no doubt that if a movie about gay cowboys gets 8 nominations, if I wrote one about gay soldiers I'd get twice that number.

Just one more reason to ignore Hollywood. Not that we really needed another one....

Officials said some sports, such as sailing, are already closed for registration because they have reached capacity, and golf and ice hockey are nearly full.

I wonder if there will be any "fisting" events.

Just as many predicted, and of course it will win two or more AA's. I would not doubt that it is given the Best Picture "award". The agenda is relentless! Was on the treadmill at the club (multiple lcd tv's) last week and this movie was the subject of Oprah for nearly half her show! It was pretty disgusting. Then I thought of Oprah's utter hypocrisy of her supposedly offering large rewards for anyone who turns in a child molester yet she shows this filth, clearly trying tp sell this as normal behavior.

That is one sorry crop of overpraised leftist twaddle and historical revisionism. They couldn't even throw in one decent movie like "Walk the Line" for the 95 percent of Americans who aren't liberal, gay, Left Coast, Bush-hating anti-war protesters. The only one of the bunch that deserves to be nominated for "Best Picture" at all is "Capote," which really was excellent, but hardly a box office giant.

If I were programming one of the other networks, I'd put a John Wayne movie opposite the Oscar telecast this year and bury it in the ratings .

Very predictable nominations except for Walk The Line getting shafted. Brokeback Mountain must've missed one of the Tech categories that most were predicting for it (9 nominations was the most common line). I'm guessing Art Direction but maybe Original Score, because that's a very cliquish group that almost never has a first-time nominee.

I was going to say the same thing. Who actually *has* seen this movie? The Michael Moore crowd? The metrosexuals?

With a gross of $51,024,343, they must have paid and awful lot for those tickets. They must have been the right people. :-)

Walk The Line didn't even get nominated for best movie, and Russell Crowe was snubbed again. He's no more of a jerk than the rest of them, and a better actor than most. And the Johnny Cash movie is at least as good as "Ray".
