I'm watching it again now. It is almost better the second time. We know what to watch and listen for. ;*)

So let's start the speculation now. If Stevens retires, who should be nominated? I vote for JRB.

I don't think all the Supreme Court has ever attended the SOTU, especially since 9/11.
I was surprised that both Cheney and Hastert were there tonight.
Are we getting lax and complacent?

It'll be good a third time around too. And the fourth and fifth...I'm sure I'll watch it several more times before the week is over.

Indeed! Excellent speech from a STRONG President.
I have a feeling we'll be coming up with even more good stuff in this speech for quite a while....

Cheney and Hastert have been there every time, I think. Except for the 9/20/01 speech. Cheney wasn't there then.

This was a very cunning speech in the way it managed to sound lofty and noble while reminding you that the other guys are defeatistic legalistic naysayers. But I liked the implied go-ahead-punk-make-my-day segment on the wiretaps. Democrats are missing the meta-narrative and making the most basic mistake of all: never confirm your caricature - in this case that you can't trust 'em on national security.Mark Steyn has a way of putting my thoughts into words. I was thinking throughout the speech that he was baiting the dems. He looked at their side of the room most of the time. He was obviously saying "make my day" on every issue. I have trouble saying what I saw. He was putting them on the defensive and putting them in a position where they will look petty and mean-spirited if they challenge him, especially on foreign policy and on Social Sec. On S.S. they took the bait and looked ridiculous.

patricia, Fox explained that usually one member of cabinet always remains away. I think tonight it was Sec.Nichols.
To: Justanobody
You did? I missed him both times...not that that's a bad thing.

"Once he cast the President in a negative light, he could never and will never see him any other way." Actually, that's not what Kristol does. Once in a while, he will toss the President a bone, he will seem to be on his side. I'm sure you've seen the same thing with some people, even on this very forum.
But, if you observe him over the long haul, you will see that Kristol never helps our side.
To: ilovew
I am not sure. I don't think so and it is a huge problem, IMO.
