LONDON, February 4 (IranMania) - Iran secretly tested a new surface-to-surface missile (SSM) on January 17, seeking to establish the measurements needed for long-range missiles, the German daily Die Welt reported in its issue to appear on Saturday. The test, conducted by members of the Revolutionary Guard led by Yahya Rahim Safavi, was successful, according to Western diplomats cited by the newspaper, which did not indicate the location where the test took place, said AFP.

Archived Picture - Iran secretly tested a new surface-to-surface missile (SSM) on January 17, seeking to establish the measurements needed for long-range missiles, the German daily Die Welt reported in its issue to appear on Saturday.
On January 28, Safavi said that Iran would use its ballistic missiles if it was attacked. "Iran has a ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles)," he said on Iranian public television. "We do not intend to attack any country, but if we are attacked, we are capable of effectively responding. Our position is defensive." Safavi was referring to the Shahab-3 missiles that Iran possesses which can reach Israel and US bases in the Middle East.

Just a quick question. I have attempted to post Die Welt articles, and they are prohibited. I know that this is from a second source. Does Die Welt have RSS feeds?

Iran is a country large enough so the distances withing Iran are shorter than the distance from Iran to Israel. With a little in country practice you could get the range to Israel on target. Unfortunately we are much closer, next door in Iraq, and withing easy targeting range.

When Ahmadinejad gets an atomic bomb IMHO he isn't going to worry about the consequences of his attacking us and Israel.

With just conventional weapons only, he still might try it. Getting to paradise is a lot better than hanging around this planet. - Tom

Rough translation from Die Welt (The world): The SSM is able to carry as many as three nuclear warheads. A goal of the test was to have been making inflight qualifications of the longrange missile's electronic and aerodynamic measurement systems. The test was the responsibility of a special team of 15 engineers from different fields, which reported to the Iranian president directly. If one follows the secret service information, then there were also several commanders of the Iranian revolutionary guard present for the firing of the rocket under the guidance Rahim Safavis as well as some leading coworkers of the Iranian aircraft industry to have pursued. The test flight of the SSM succeeded, according diplomatic circles in Iran. Possibly that was the reason that Rahim Safavi explained on television January 28th, that the country has now ballistic rockets with a range of 2000 kilometers.

The known nuclear payload capacity is what our American media dares not to speak of.

Here is additional mention, with the speculation as to missile-type:

German Newspaper: Iran Tested Missile Secretly in January
February 6, 2006 Missile Threat.com

The German daily Die Welt cites western intelligence sources as reporting that Iran secretly tested a new surface-to-surface ballistic missile last month. The purpose of the test, which allegedly took place on January 17, was to collect electronic and aerodynamic measurements from the long-range missile during its flight. The test was conducted by a 15-person engineering team under the direct control of the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and was attended by commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as well as some high-ranking employees of the Iranian aviation industry. Diplomatic sources in Iran are cited as saying the test was a success. The German news agency DDP speculates that the above-mentioned missile may have been the Shahab-4, an intermediate-range weapon similar to the older Shahab-3 except for its increased range of over 2,000 km (approx. 1,250 miles) and its improved accuracy based on more modern digital guidance systems. Although the Shahab-4 project has been shrouded in secrecy in recent years, it is most likely an attempt to make Iran’s missile program less dependent upon foreign materials. (Article)
