Tiger shark, probably.

Yup... A Tiger nibbled a few fingers off of a tourist in the same area last December.

Lankheit kept paddling, hoping the 15- to 18-foot shark would tire and stop following him.

Right..... like THAT'S ever gonna happen.... a kayaker out-paddling a swimming great white? Get real.

Great Whites studied and tagged off SF have been detected in Hawaiian waters especially the large females. This recent book 'Devils Teeth' documents the author's eight month odyssey in the Farallon islands near SF.

Check the Maui phone book under The Waterfront Restaurant and make a reservation. Finest dining and service and you will be on the ocean watching the boats come and go from the Maalaea harbor. MMMMMmmmmmmmm. (5 star rating)

Do they get a lot of Bulls in Hawaii?

Not that I'm aware, just an example of another "nosy" shark. Oceanic whitetips are also investigatory, but prefer open ocean.

I think Bull sharks are found primarily in the Indian and Atlantic oceans, certainly GofM and Carribean.

How perfectly horrifying that must have been.

We really don't belong in the water, do we?

They're allowed if you don't get caught.

Air is the only practical way into HI. You have to declare them even if they're in your checked luggage. I suspect the airlines would rat you out on the other end. It isn't just carry that's illegal in the Peoples' Democratic Democracy of HI, but handgun ownership and possession as well. (I don't know about long guns.)

for recreation things, go to mauidiveshop.com. They have scuba, snorkeling, boats, and can direct you to helicopter rides etc.etc. Also go to Ulalena.com and try to see this show in Lahaina while you are here. It's Hawaiian and very good. You will love it. We are full of Humpback whales right now but they will be gone by the time you get here. Aloha from Maui

Alright, it's official now, the sharks have set up their own version of Animal Planet, entitled "People Planet". The shark following the kayaker is the shark world's equivalent of Steve Irwin, always running after and accosting unsuspecting People (animals in Irwin's case) and showing them off to the camera!

Okay, I've worked my giggles off now. This is probably the strangest shark article on FR in a while. A really big, predatory fish swimming along behind a man in a kayak, not doing anything other than watching him for all of fifteen minutes?

Mayhap it was just curious, probably had never seen anything like that before and wanted to find out exactly what it was. Good thing the other boat showed before the fishy stalker conducted a few physical tests.
