Bill would allow guns in car trunks (MI)

Capital News Service

Governor supports efforts to simplify state's current laws

Firearms owners would be permitted to carry unloaded weapons in their trunks, even if they don't have a hunting license, under legislation under consideration in the state House.

Rep. Tim Moore, the sponsor, said many well-meaning people are unintentionally breaking the present law.

"We want to make sure that law-abiding citizens don't face penalties," said Moore, calling it a "common sense bill."

The bill would require that all guns be unloaded "in both barrel and magazine and be carried in the trunk of a vehicle."

Currently, gun owners who are transporting guns must either have a hunting license or be en route to or from a "rifle or target range, trap or skeet shooting ground, or archery range." Violations carry a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $250 fine.

That destination provision makes the law unenforceable, said Sam Washington, executive director of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. "I could say I was going out to a range, and the officer would have no way of knowing," he said.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm supports the bill and will sign it if it comes to her desk, said spokeswoman Heidi Watson: "It simplifies current regulations."

The bill is before the House Conservation, Forestry and Outdoor Recreation Committee.

Chairman Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, said he expected the bill to sail through committee and pass the House because he and Moore have seen no significant opposition.

"Nobody's come forward to me to say that they're against it," said Moore.

Casperson said he plans to schedule a hearing this month.

I've meant to ask. If you have ammo in your car or truck (perhaps you've just purchased it) and you stop for lunch, and it's a summer day, can the high temps inside your car cause the round(s) to discharge? Seriously.

Guns are Constitutionally protected.

They are not protected because people hunt.
They are not protected because people enjoy time on the range.
They ARE protected for reasons of self-defense.

Being unloaded and locked in the trunk diminshes their ability to aid in self-defense.

IMHO, Iraq would have cooked off already.

Unlikely. Sometimes when firing automatic machine guns the barrell will get hot enough to cook one off in the chamber but thats only after many many rounds.

I highly doubt it. As in my younger days I heard a clunking in my dryer after it had been on for quite a while. It was about 4 9mm rounds. Oops!

On top of that when a round goes off outside of a chamber of a gun it really has no directional force. I mean it would be more like a super mini grenade that wouldn't penetrate a car trunk. The bullet would just lay there and the brass would expand or shatter and that would be about it. IMO

Michigan Statewide Handgun Regulations

Statewide Handgun Regulations

(Note: The guidelines listed below may not apply to a person having a concealed pistol license or a person specifically exempt by law from a concealed pistol license and carrying their handgun in accordance with their license or exemption.)

Carrying of Handguns in the Field
While in the field, handguns must be carried in plain view. Carrying a handgun in a holster in plain view is permitted.

Transportation of Handguns
You may transport your registered handguns while en route to and from your hunting or target shooting area; however, handguns, including BB guns larger than .177 caliber and all pellet guns must be unloaded and in a closed case designed for the storage of firearms in the trunk of the vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a trunk, the handgun must be unloaded and in a closed case designed for the storage of firearms and cannot be readily accessible to any occupant of the vehicle.

It is a crime for certain felons to possess firearms, including rifles and shotguns, in Michigan. For more information regarding statewide handgun regulations, obtaining a concealed pistol license or Michigan concealed weapons and firearms laws, contact your local police department or visit the Michigan State Police website at www.michigan.gov/msp.

Yeah, that'll be a lot of use in case of a carjacking.

Striking the primer is what discharges ammunition. If you're asking about a hot evironment, they would have to be tossed into a fire.

yanno, this is actually a redundant law. you can have a weapon in your vehicle for transport for any lawful purpose. remember that MI is an open carry state, therefore transporting it anywhere can be considered "lawful."
also, AG ruled that if you have CCW, you may store weapons in your trunk anywhere, including parking lots of gun free zones.
they don't need to pass a new bill, they need to rescind the old one.

FWIW, once it's that hot, it's hot enough to char human flesh on contact. (not sure what that works out to in degrees)

A big fat NO! In fact, every law enforcement car and truck in America carries extra ammo in their trunks.

It takes considerable heat to set off a round.

I always wondered what the point is of carrying a gun in the trunk of your car. When that fellow snatches your door open at the red light, are you going to freeze the frame for a sec while you run around to retrieve your piece from the trunk?
