And what the HELL is all this self-mutalation suppose to prove? I guess I should have paid more attention to these freaks while growing up because, now I'm just bewildered.

Ha- no, I still say that the best part is when he tells them maybe their god is "on the toilet", as we would say today- "turned aside" back then- and they would have to yell louder.

For a prophet, he had a great sense of humor. But that's just my opinion- ha

See post 39, this is still practiced here in the U.S.
It will probably die out over the next decade, but it is still here. Look up Los Hermanos Penitentes on any search engine.

A lot of them slit their foreheads because it's a good bloodletting spot

Good point, what may look in the photos like serious wounds can just be tiny cuts. Cut your forehead even slightly and you'll bleed all over.

Fascinating, Captain. And Baal worshippers were intoshild sacrifice and child sexual abuse, also abuse of women, Temple Prostitutes, sacred groves, that sort of thing.

Different Ba'al. See my #52. The Arabs had loads of gods at that time, and some of them could have been called Ba'al but they all went by Mecca where the Quraysh (Mohammed's tribe) had idols for them all and made loads of money off the pilgrims. Mohammed had to flee Mecca because he pissed off the powers that be by demanding that the idolatry be stopped.

letting Husayn ibn Ali go to his death in the "Battle" of Karbala

Yeah, "battle," more like an assassination with collateral damage.

As a Christian we can be very thankful

As a Christian, you may know this phenomenon better as "Mortification of the flesh" as practiced by St. Francis and others. There was even a Christian movement called Flagellantism. Some still practice it to this day, usually during Lent. Monty Python even made fun of it in Holy Grail.

This is not a practice condoned by the Catholic Church. It was practiced in the Middle Ages, but was banned in 1261 by Pope Alexander IV. Another Papal Bull by Pope Clement in 1349 condemned flagellants as heretics.

The self-flagellation and crucifixtions of the Phillipines are not condoned by the Church. There are still some bizzare sects (such as Opus Dei and a couple of isolated monastaries) where this practice continues - but it is certainly no part of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

It does appear that it's been denounced by the catholic church, however, the fact remains that the pictures I've seen were from some religious parade in the Philippines and it was labeled a catholic procession and that is where the self flagellation was taking place. So we are both correct.

Your attempt to argue like a liberal by bringing up snake handling is lame. Firstly, I'd denounce snake handling as well, although there is at least some scripture they point to about handling snakes and not dying whereas there is nothing that supports self flagellation. But your effort to make one sound better by pointing out another wrong practice is the same tactic that liberals use when they get defensive.

"What about the bizzare Fundamental Protestants that still practice the weird snake handling? Should we pin that on the Baptist Church or on the Church of Christ??"

Sorry. Can't pin that one on us (Baptists). Those congregations are what is commonly referred to as Holiness sects.

And I've seen parades in Northern Ireland labeled a "Protestant parade" where they throw Molotov cocktails and shoot at Catholics. So does that mean violence should be pinned on the Protestant church? Your logic is faulty.

Your anti-Catholic prejudices are peeking through. I find it interesting that you do not capitalize the word Catholic. That means you must agree that the Catholic Church is indeed "catholic" - meaning universal or worldwide. It's called that because there was only one Christian church for centuries until some men decided to form their own religions. The Catholic Church is the only Christian denomination founded by Jesus Christ - the rest of them were founded by Martin Luthor, John Knox, Calvin and the rest.

Sorry - I didn't mean to cast any aspersions on the Baptist Church - I sometimes find it difficult to tell the difference between all the myriad Protestant denominations.

Actually, it's your prejudice that is peeking through. You're the one that continues to attempt to deflect attention to the catholic church by shifting attention to the protestant church...you've done it in both of your posts to me so far. You seem incapable of addressing the topic without bringing up some other unrelated topic...that is exactly how liberals argue...they attempt to justify or defelect attention by changing the subject.

I find it interesting that you do not capitalize the word Catholic.

Whatever.

Look - I'm merely pointing out that is unfair to blame the Catholic Church for what some Fillipinos do - just as it would be unfair to blame the Protestant church for the doings in Northern Ireland. How is that "changing the subject?"

If you have trouble grasping that concept without accusing me of "liberal tactics" then there isn't much more I can say.

No offense taken. LOL, if you're confused by the myraid of Protestant denominations, you would be TOTALLY confused by the types of Baptists churches under the name Baptist which aren't the same at all. The devil is in the details, and we're an argumentative bunch. :)

You want confusing? There's a church in Detroit at 8 Mile & Woodward named: St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Then to make it even more confusing - it's a Serbian Orthodox church!
