Democracy Now's Goodman: U.S. Uses Cartoon Riots to Gin Up War Against Iran, Syria
Hardball/NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

by Mark Finkelstein

February 8, 2006 - 20:21.

Hardball's screen graphic "Global Fury" presumably referred to the rioting over the Mohammed cartoons. But it might also have been a subliminally sardonic comment about Chris Matthews' guest, Amy Goodman, host of the far-left radio show "Democracy Now."

If Hillary is an angry woman, perhaps she's taken lessons from Goodman. This is one angry lady. Goodman's explanation by way of a justification of the rioting?

"This is about people feeling marginalized. This has to do with the war in Iraq, this has to do with 'the Occupation' [translation: Israel's claim to a right to exist], this is about hundreds being held at Guantanamo with the Koran being desecrated."

Matthews shot back: "You're eager to assign victimhood [to the rioters]." He then raised the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh who was killed by a radical Islamist two months after his film 'Submission' - about the abuse of Muslim women - was shown on national TV in Holland.

Asked Matthews:

"What about a filmmaker in Northern Europe getting killed because some in the audience don't like the movie. Who's the victim? Those who feel agitated enough to kill a filmmaker or the guy who gets killed? That's easy for me. Somebody kills you, they're the bad guy. Who do you say is the bad guy here?"

Goodman wouldn't condemn the murderer, and quickly changed the subject, saying:

"I think that it is extremely important that we understand what it means when people are just made fun of on the cartoon pages but their voices are not heard on the front pages."

Right. And what better way to debunk the image of being hotheads and fanatics then rioting and burning embassies?

Goodman then indulged the left's penchant for conspiracy theories:

"I think the United States is opportunistically using [the riots] to now vilify countries."

When Matthews asked: "Are we ginning up a war with Iran and Syria?", Goodman didn't hesitate:

"Absolutely. Every excuse to go after these two countries [is being used]," referring to "the tremendous anger that this is generating not only in the Arab world but among 'peace-loving people' all over the world."

Peace-loving people "not only in the Arab world"? You mean, in addition to those peace activists currently sacking embassies and vowing to behead those who insult Islam?

So the media knew the Muslim world would be enraged at the Abu Graib pictures and published them anyway since the outrage would be directed at our soldiers.

And now the media won't publish cartoons because the Muslim outrage would be directed at them. The media. Who, collectively, seem to be cowards.

Goodman: a true Socialist/Communist, proudly representing the views of 5% of electorate. The MSM should label and attribute her as such.

Well there it is...America ginning up action from islam. If only the islamic world were more reactive, we wouldn't have to resort to such extremes.

But as history attests...the islamic world is inertial...if it were only more reactive, we might actually have reason to worry. But, as the President says, islam is a noble faith. It surely isn't capable of such overreaction. Islam must have been hijacked by that tiny crew of zombies.

Go back to your movies and dining. Nothing to see here...please move along...

There's a face that would scare a mummy.

How, exactly, is the US "using" these riots to gin up a war? Don't just use rhetoric, Crypt Keeper, the media are showing the reactions to the cartoons--period.

Is she saying that the media shouldn't show these reactions? Wouldn't that be more "marginalizing"?

Why do I have a sense this is one of those people who think if we only DIALOGUED with the Islamofascists then we would all live in peace?

And why would any supposed feminist (I'm assuming) be so heavily defending these folks?

People like Goodman concoct these paranoid theories to get their fellow leftists all in a lather. Bush has not used these riots as a reason to attack Iran and Syria - that should be obvious. In fact, he's called for respect for Islam and and end to rioting. I don't necessarily agree with what he's been doing, but that's what he's been doing - he hasn't been calling for war.

I think that these people have the "occupation" routine ground into their DNA. They have been doing it since Alexander the Great conquered the area. Everything is sneaky and sub rosa. They cannot just give it up, as the so-called Palestinians clearly demonstrate.

Thanks for the report, glgb. I think leftists are getting desperate, in the face of the ever-growing realization on behalf of the sane world that maybe, just maybe, the non-politically correct commentators might be correct on this issue.

"I think that it is extremely important that we understand what it means when people are just made fun of on the cartoon pages but their voices are not heard on the front pages."

I have been busy but managed to catch local talk radio host Lowell Green this a.m. for an hour or so.

There was this Muslim apologist on....he kept saying, "We have no opportunity to speak our opinion, to speak our voice!"

Lowell must have said five times, "Tell me your opinion!" By the last time, Lowell said, "speak your freaking voice!"

And then, maybe it was another caller, but he asked another Muslim caller, or maybe the same one, the question: "If Canadian papers publish the cartoon, is the same violent response justified?"

The response was ... yes. The caller tried to backtrack, but it was caught on tape.

So these nutcases are here, in North America, just waiting for the chance.

However, I don't think they'd get far here. Definitely not in the U.S., and not in Canada, either, if the authorities allow people to bring their registered guns to the riots. ;)
