LONDON (Reuters) - The European Union may try to draw up a media code of conduct to avoid a repeat of the furor caused by the publication across Europe of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, an EU commissioner said on Thursday.
In an interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph, EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini said the charter would encourage the media to show "prudence" when covering religion.
"The press will give the Muslim world the message: We are aware of the consequences of exercising the right of free expression," he told the newspaper. "We can and we are ready to self-regulate that right."
The cartoons, which first appeared in a Danish newspaper last September before being reprinted across Europe, sparked a wave of protests around the world.

Kind of defeats the purpose of "free" speech/expression don't you think? Only in Lefty ville can you regulate something and still call it free.

It would not have legal status now. What about 2 or 3 or 5 years down the road? Their foot would be in the door.

Utterly preposterous! I'm getting sick of these appeasement-minded governments saying "we support freedom of expression but..." I'm sorry, but that language is pure Orwellian doubletalk, and they don't support freedom of expression if they're not willing to defend it!

The reality is that it will be the advertising agencies that would enforce this. Don't comply with the code? There goes government advertising, there goes major corporate advertising, organizational advertising.
They'd go broke in hours and that would do it.

We do so at our own peril. Bowing to Islam (which is a supremacist political system) means subjegating ourselves to our new masters.
Islam does not treat the people of the world the same. Muslims are at the top of the LEGAL system. Greater protection under the law; offenses by non-muslims against muslims carry greater penalty than those for those committed by muslims against muslims. At the bottom are those committed by muslims against non-muslims. They even distinguish between the rights of Jews and Christians (people of the book) and people of even lesser faiths (Buddhism, Hindus, etc.) or of no faith (Atheists).
While it can be shown that there are periods at which muslims were permitted to picture Mohammed, non-muslims will always be prohibited from doing so. As non-muslims, we simply "don't have that right" no matter whether we do it out of love or hate.

The EU are absolute cowards and appeasers. What's about to befall them from the Muslim thugs and murderers will be their own fault. "Self regulated" free speech is not free speech at all. This code is driven by fear for personal safety at the expense of principle. The EU has surrendered already and it looks like it will be up to us to defend western civilization as usual. Although, with the EU PC and white flag crowd, only Britain seems worth defending these days.

Even going back to WWII, George Orwell was bothered by how the press in England would openly be critical of the US and UK but never publish a bad word about Stalin or the Soviets.

"Self regulated" free speech is not free speech at all. That's what Political Correctness has always been about. Thoughtcrime. Censoring yourself.
The worldviews have already been decided. Don't be an ugly dissenter, join the masses.

To be blunt about it, Mohammed IS an antiChrist (if not THE antiChrist). His followers (and deny it as they may, muslims DO worship Mohammed) have been led astray from the message and tales of Jesus Christ.
Islam, unlike any other religion, acknowledges the existence of Jesus yet denies His divinity, His crucifixion, His death, and His resurrection. Other than that, they believe Jesus to be an "important" figure. And then come all of their "truths" they added to the Judeo-Christian Bible.
Denies Jesus and diverts His flock. That is the nature of an antiChrist. The followers think they are doing right.
