Stryker Light Sales Soar in Europe
StrategyPage ^ | February 9, 2006

Yet another European nation is replacing its Cold War era armored vehicles, with wheeled vehicles similar to the American Stryker. Belgium has ordered 241 Piranha IIIC vehicles. This vehicle is based on the Piranha III LAV, long used by the U.S. Marines. These vehicles were designed by Mowag of Switzerland, a company now owned by General Dynamics. The 14 ton, 8x8 vehicle has a maximum road speed of 100 kilometers an hour. Belgium is getting several variants of the vehicle, (99 infantry carriers, 32 armed with a 30-mm autocannon, 40 with a 90-mm cannon., 24 command vehicles, 12 ambulances, 17 recovery and repair, and 18 engineer vehicles.) Deliveries begin late next year. These vehicles cost about a million dollars each. This is much cheaper than the U.S. Stryker (which go for about $1.8 million each), and has raised questions if the additional features (sensors and computers) in the Stryker are worth the cost. The troops using Stryker are very much in favor of a vehicle they "boot up" instead of start up. Since the European wheeled armored vehicles are unlikely to see combat, the controversy will continue.

Interesting General Dynamics also aquired the military arm of Colt Firearms as well and is introducing a new piston driven monolithic rail upper receiver system for the M-16 family of long guns...

This AM at SHOT SHOW '06 in Las Vegas..

14 tons going over 60 mph. Don’t get in its way.

Re #15: I always get a chuckle at how clean and nicely painted those "arms show" photos are. In real life they get a "bit" dirty and dinged up!

Apart from those European nations with contingents in Afghanistan and Iraq

There's always the liklihood of Kosovo kicking up again, mate.

Mr. Cavanagh,

Please accept my apologies for toddlintown. The reality over here is that most of us do not see England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales as "European". France is European. Britain has always been sui generis and has always gone her own way. May she always.

Myself, I am repelled by the Brussels government and most of the French "intelligentsia".

Your post first puzzled me. "But Tony is English!!" my mind protested.

This "piston driven" design - does it keep powder debris out of the receiver? That darn gas tube into the bolt carrier business is just awful in my experience.

ZSU-57-2

Old anti-aircraft system. No radar. 2 x s-60s mounted in an open turret. Hell against ground targets though.

BTR-70, not even in the same class as the LAV or Stryker family. You can find these rust buckets all over eastern europe and the middle east. Seen a bunch as 'parts' in Iraq summer '03. Best use for them.

Actually, you're right. I do look at England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as...well, I guess, Britain, and don't make the connection of them to "the continent," that is, Europe.

I've been called on this 1/2 dozen times so far.
