Dope-fighting deputies told to back off from border[Hudspeth County, Texas]
Express-News Border Bureau ^ | 02/09/2006 | Mariano Castillo

Posted on 02/09/2006 9:28:51 AM PST by SwinneySwitch

LAREDO — Unidentified men thought to be drug cartel operatives threatened the safety of the Hudspeth County deputies who thwarted a smuggling operation east of El Paso on Jan. 23, along with their families.

Hudspeth County Chief Deputy Mike Doyal said three men inside a black and red Ford Bronco approached the wife of one of the deputies last Thursday and made a threat before driving across the Rio Grande into Mexico.

"They told her that her husband and the other officers needed to stay off the river down there," Doyal said.

On Friday, a Hudspeth deputy in the Fort Hancock area received information a cartel was talking about putting together a "death squad" to target the deputies, Doyal said.

The three deputies who were targeted were the same who witnessed the failed Jan. 23 marijuana smuggling operation that set off diplomatic volleys between the United States and Mexico because men dressed in military uniform provided the drug smugglers protection during the standoff.

The Mexican government denied its army was involved in the incursion, blaming drug traffickers in pseudo-army gear.

Sheriff's deputies that day gave chase to a convoy of SUVs that fled toward the Rio Grande, where a military-style Humvee awaited to protect them.

Authorities found more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana inside the SUVs that broke down on the U.S. side of the border.

The Sheriff's Office didn't release the names of the threatened deputies, but one of the deputies involved in the incident told the San Antonio Express-News on Jan. 26 that, "Basically, if we tried to do anything, it would've been suicide for us. We were outgunned and outmanned."

Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West offered to relocate the threatened deputies.

"Each one of them stated that they were going to stand their ground. They weren't going to be run out," Doyal said.

El Paso FBI spokeswoman Andrea Simmons said the agency was aware of the threats, but had not been asked by the sheriff to investigate.

The FBI could investigate the case under a law that makes it illegal for anyone to cross international boundaries with the purpose of threatening someone, Simmons said.

The incident has resulted in extra security near the deputies' homes and at area schools.

Sheriff West was among the law enforcement officials who testified in Washington Tuesday about the increasingly brazen drug traffickers along the border.

We need troops down there yesterday.

If Mexico refuses to do anything about this, maybe we ought to just occupy northern Mexico and restore law and order.

anyone expecting fedgov to get involved here will be disappointed, unless you are hoping for fedgov to tell local LEO's to back off and quit harrassing innocent traffickers.

The only reason this stuff happens 4 yrs after the 2001 terrorist attacks is because bushgov does not want to secure the border.

There are a lot of these nearby...I think Ft. Bliss near El Paso has them. It is a mystery to me why it would not be a good idea and a great training opportunity for the soldiers there to patrol the southern border.

Whatever is done, it needs to be done soon. The attack on our Country is getting more concentrated by the day. We are attacked from the Southern and Northern borders, both coasts and by a determined enemy within. Coupled with that, it will not be long before the lunatic imams here will be offended by a cartoon (or about anything else) to the point they issue some fatwa or edict and all the muslums here in the United States will go nuts....

I suspect that this problem will be solved by the local constabulary as a Barrett 50 caliber is an off-the-rack item in many Texas gunshops.

You are welcome to advise the sheriff that there are at least a hundred FReepers who might well be glad to drop by that area and take interest, some with police experience, most with considerable military expertise. Several are already resident in Texas.

No payment necessary, it'd be a nice vacation for most of us. But a barbecue would be a welcome and hospitable touch.

You have to see firsthand the damage they do.The first time I shot one,I felt kind of bad because they look so much like a dog. But,after seeing the mangled horses and cattle,I got over that. They will send a bitch in heat to lure your dog out, whereupon, they surround and attack, and eat your dog!Not to count the rabies and other diseases they bring with them.

You are so right. What the world needs to understand, there are a lot of veterans who have already been trained, and if need were to arise,an Army could be put together almost overnight.Maybe some of us cant beat the bush, but we can man a radio, shoot,or whatever it takes to take care of business.I will pass that on.Arvin is a good man.{Sheriff}He is about 2 hrs.from me and the last time I saw him was at an auction he was holding of confiscated autos.Bought me a real nice van for 1500.00 bucks![minus gas tank and spare tire]Wheels were worth that!I'm thinking he must be putting a hurt on someones business. He has a LOT of ground to cover.

President Bush: Do your sworn duty!

Don't bother. He's already shown he has no intention of living up to his "sworn duty".

Let's all face it...we are being Invaded by a Foreign Power, and our Leaders are holding the door open!

The movie "Red Dawn" showed EXACTLY the same type of Politicians.

We are well past begging our elected "Leaders" to do their job.

I'm in favor ofintroducing an article of Impeachment specifically regarding the Open Border, the attacks on Uniformed Federal Agents and Local Constabulary, and the tacit approval, if not outright "compicity" of this Administration in a Time of War!

The disregard they hold the Border situation just proves to me my instincts about this man were right, and he is NOT the "Leader" his Cult following have made him out to be!

I know already that the deck is stacked, and it will not happen. But it also shows I owe no loyalty to D.C power brokers.

My allegiance is to the Constitution, and my fellow Americans that see what is going on!

It is way past time for something to be done about the border with Mexico.

Bush is treating this stinking problem the same way he did with what the scuzzy ex-president Carter said about him at that weird King rock concert funeral, he acts like it was never said so he doesn't respond and continues to make windbag speeches(such as today's)disappointing the American people and goes on his merry way like he was Bill Clinton himself.

It is maddening and very disturbing!

I am begining to wonder if Bush has a deadly fear of the sleazy Democrats, politically, he cannot overcome.

If this is true then, adios muchachos, YA' LL!
