Anyway, I lived in Revere, MA when the storm hit. I was a sophomore in high school. Revere was one of the hardest hit communties and I didn't have school for a month because my school was used as a homeless shelter. I lived a half mile from the ocean and most of the neighborhoods between me and the ocean were under water. I was very fortunate to have lived on higher ground. I had four feet of snow outside my house but if you walked five blocks down the street there was no snow at all because the ocean flooded those areas out and washed it all away.
Like I said, I have a story about that storm and maybe someday I'll rewrite my essay to the best of my recollection and post it here.
I have to go to work anyway; if I don't work I don't get paid. But the kids are feeling awfully cheated that this snow couldn't have started on, say, Sunday night. My daughter still remembers the wonders of 1996, with two blizzards in one glorious week and no school for nearly two weeks.
My husband was leading a Boy Scout camping trip to the N GA scout reservation, right on the Tennessee border.
They got snowed on last night, and a grand time was had by all - several inches I believe. But they are forecasting sleet and freezing rain for tonight, and given the potential for ice on the narrow little blacktop roads (with no salt, no sand, and no guardrails) they decided to bag it and beat the sleet home tonight. So we should see them all wet, cold, and hungry within the hour . . .
Here in middle Indiana, it has been a cupcake winter.
I plow snow with a Polaris 4wd ATV, have done it only once this winter, in early December.
This global warming is great stuff, it's like a Nashville, TN winter. Good luck to all on the coast, and don't work the shovel too hard unless you are in good physical shape.
Here in Manassas VA Was flurries this morning when I woke up . Turned to rain at about 9 am about 3 or 4 pm started to snow again. Now at least 1- or 2 now
Temperature at my house is now 29 degrees. It started off at 12 degrees this morning and has been rising all day and into this evening. Which is a good sign because our biggest snowstorms happen when the temperature is in the upper 20s and low 30s. When it gets too cold, it means that the bulk of the precipitation is likely to be off to the east.
Don't jump the gun too fast..
Generally speaking, when the winter is mild, february and March tend to be the months of cold snaps and snow..
There's still a good chance of same for another 45 days...
Here in central NJ, we are experiencing a "media blizzard" so far; ie: the snow, which has been falling since about 200PM,is just beginning to stick, and the wind is at a leisurely 8-10 knots...downhill.
They are now claiming horrendous things will happen between 3AM and 11AM tomorrow morning.
I'm a bit "skepti-bobble", as the kid says on that despicable commercial.
Might want to bring a shovel on the plane with you.
I've used that long-term lot plenty of times. My favorite airport to fly out of. Only 20 minutes from my house
We have about an inch right now.
Anyone have the link to that thread, or the one from 9-11? Don't mean to seem crass, but I think it would be interesting reading.
I'm glad you made it!
I'm paying attention because my niece lives in Baltimore now!
Problem with Maryland, Virginia and the DC area in general is that it was just too plain warm today to get maximum snowfall. It was 36-38 degrees when the storm hit and so most of the snow melted on the pavement (or turned to slush on the grass) for the first few hours. I believe that the snow is now sticking just fine now that the temps have dropped to freezing but unfortunately, it cut down the total snowfall in those parts quite a bit.
Sam,
Nothing in the way of precipitation here in the Hartford area YET.
Please add me to ping list. Cardinal
Thats not too hard to deal with, wanting to drag out a couple of more trees so that should be enough to keep the fields from getting torn up.
yep remember it well ...
I read all the posts just don't respond too much sad day
congrats on being the 1 st
I know several FReeprs who are driving back and hope they made it through okay.
Just consulted my 2006 copy of Old Farmer's Almanac and it does not mention that at all. Anyway, I have been following this particular storm all day and it does appear to be slower than the models are suggesting. So it is not outside the realm of possibility that total snowfall amounts by tomorrow night might rival the Blizzard of 78 in some areas.
Nothing here in the Lower Hudson Valley yet either. They're prediting 10-15 inches here.
