Live Thread - Northeast Blizzard - February 11-12 2006

Posted on 02/11/2006 3:20:57 PM PST by SamAdams76

In the spirit of NautiNurse's hurricane live threads of last summer, I have agreed to host the live thread of major snowstorms in the Northeast.

My criteria for these live threads is at least one major Northeast city getting a foot of snow or more. In this case, we have many Northeast cities in that sort of jeopardy, from Boston down to Washington DC

We've only had the occasion one previous time this winter of such a thread. That was the December 5 storm that dumped over a foot in Boston, much of it coming during a three hour period during a Friday afternoon rush hour where we had "thundersnow". That was pretty cool - although I didn't get home until 8PM that night!

Anyway, the storm on tap has potential to dump 12-18 inches in Boston proper and at least a foot in New York City and Philly. D.C. might come close to that too though they started off warm and much of the snow so far has melted on pavement.

The snow has now spread into NYC and we expect it here in the Boston area by midnight tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a flat-out Blizzard in most of southern New England.

So without further ado, let the thread begin!

If you want on my Northeast snowstorm pinglist, freepmail me.

We're getting hosed in central PA. Only in the 1 to 4 range. Some people get to have all the fun.

Done.

This morning, it was 12 degrees in my backyard. I live 35 miles NW of Boston. I took a two hour walk in the woods and it was a perfect morning for walking. Deep, blue skies. Not a cloud in the sky. Woods were eerily quiet except for the birds.

Around 2PM, the sky started to fill with high cirrus clouds. Always the forerunner of a "nor'easter" in these parts. It was a beautiful sunset in these parts. Mostly cloudy skies with nearly a full moon poking through the thin clouds. Though off to the south, you could see much thicker clouds approaching.

Based on radar, I estimate the snow to overspread my area by 10PM tonight. At which time I will go out for a walk and wait for the first flakes to come down.

Al Gore said that the 20 inches of snow is directly due to Global Warming.

Me too. I love these live threads! I was on the live thread of the shuttle disaster and a ton of others. The thing about the shuttle thread is FR broke the story. Anybody remember that?

It's snowing in the MSM capitol so here's our lead story. How will Katie Couric get to work Monday? Stay tuned.

I'm in the NW part of Montgomery County, PA. We are forecast to be on the western edge of the heaviest snow. But if the wind blows the way they are forecasting, it'll be ugly all day tomorrow.

Take whatever they're forecasting and divide by 2.
