Boy charged with felony for carrying sugar

BY JUSTINA WANG A 12-year-old Aurora boy who said he brought powdered sugar to school for a science project this week has been charged with a felony for possessing a look-alike drug, Aurora police have confirmed.

The sixth-grade student at Waldo Middle School was also suspended for two weeks from school after showing the bag of powdered sugar to his friends.

The boy, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, said he brought the bag to school to ask his science teacher if he could run an experiment using sugar.

Two other boys asked if the bag contained cocaine after he showed it to them in the bathroom Wednesday morning, the boy's mother said.

He joked that it was cocaine, before telling them, "just kidding," she said.

Aurora police arrested the boy after a custodian at the school reported the boy's comments. The youngster was taken to the police station and detained, before being released to his parents that afternoon.

"This is getting ridiculous," said the boy's mother. "They treated my son like a criminal. .. . This is no way to treat a 12-year-old kid."

East Aurora School District officials declined to comment on the case, citing privacy issues.

The district issued a written statement, which said: "The dangers of illegal drugs and controlled substances are clear.

Could get probation "Look-alike drugs and substances can cause that same level of danger because staff and students are not equipped to differentiate between the two."

The school handbook states that students can be suspended or expelled for carrying a look-alike drug.

Penalties for juveniles are decided on a case-by-case basis, but if convicted, the sixth-grader could likely face up to five years' probation, said Jeffery Jefko, deputy director of Kane County juvenile court services.

Juveniles who have prior criminal records could also be placed in a residential treatment program if convicted, he said.

First of all, the time to fight school policy is before your child breaks that policy, not afterwards.

That only works until some idiotic educrat comes up with an off-the-wall interpretation of policy, as in this case.

We have an opportunity every two years to elect a whole new group to write our laws.

Whereupon they refuse to dance with the one what brung 'em.

"Saying that I do not approve of "look-alike" drugs at does NOT mean that I approve of hauling a kid off to the police station if he does it."

elkfersupper was addressing school policy not state law.

"I phone call to the parent, and a stern chat with the principal should be enough in most rational situations."

So you agree with a school policy prohibiting look-alike drugs. Well, elkfersupper doesn't. So there.

The kid would have been better off bringing cocaine and telling everyone it was powdered sugar.

No lookalike drug violation.

"off-the-wall interpretation of policy, as in this case."

What's so "off-the-wall" about interpreting a white-powder filled baggie claimed to be cocaine as violating a no-look-alike-drug school policy?

Robertpaulsen,

I doubt than any private school ( other than a drug rehab) would have called the police and hauled the kid off to the police station.

I do not approve of drug look-alikes in any school private or government.

Neither do I approve of hauling a kid off to the police station for the first offense. A stern talk from the principal would likely been enough but I recognize that principals was in a legal box (created by political bullies) and had no other option.

Government schools are like this. The biggest political bully gets to impose its will on other people's children by way of nutty laws.

Solution: Get your kid out of that nut house. Lobby like crazy to privatize universal K-12 education.

We will never reform government schools precisely because they are and always will be responsive to the whims of the biggest political bullies.

Once it was determined to be neither cocaine, nor lookalike cocaine, but in fact powdered sugar, the kid should have been told by someone not to do that anymore, and that should have been the end of the story.

Think about that one for a second. If you get convicted of having sugar you can be put in a state rehab program what are you going to say at the meetings?Hello im john smith and im a sugaholic. Its been three weeks since I ate a powdered donut.at first it was just a tablespoon here and there to get me going in themornings but then the addiction got its claws in me and I moved up to the harder stuff brown sugar. But I still thought I could quit anytime I wanted until I started dosing with nutrasweet that eventually lead me down the dark road of splenda. After that I lost my job my wife and kids left me and I was living on skid row begging for spare change and giving strangers lewinskys in the bus station bathroom for pixie stick money before i ended up here.

this is the most retarded abuse of power by a school system under zero tolerance that ive seen in a long time and another constitution destroying aspect of the war on some drugs that is rabidly turnig us into a police state so of course a lot of people here on freerepublic support it. I wish to hell those people that support this crap would get off of here and start thier own website called www.enslaved statist.com because its apparent that they arent happy posting on freerepublic and they are absolutly miserable living in a free republic.

I have a fiance living in the philippines right now and I am very seriously thinking of moving there after i marry her and becoming a philippino citizen.I really dont see this country survivng more then 10 or 15 years as the usa maybe and quiet possibly it will be the u.s.s.a but thats not a country I want to be in so I will probably jump over the new berlin wall before its built because it will be way to hard to do so afterwords.

You would, of course, allow look-alike guns, right?

Actually, I would allow real guns. Every day of high school, I had a loaded rifle in a gun rack in my vehicle. Had I unlimbered it and proceeded to get into mischief, I would have been taken out by the Future Farmers of America, who both outnumbered and outgunned me.

This is as it should be.

"I doubt than any private school ( other than a drug rehab) would have called the police and hauled the kid off to the police station."

Given the state statute, the principal at a private school would be in the same legal box.

"Once the child has a substance he has claimed is an illegal drug, how is the principal supposed to verify that it is indeed powdered sugar? "

In a totalitarian regime where laws are structured so as to revoke common sense as a tool for principal determinations, the principal shall not challenge the veracity of the child's statement: "it is a drug." In a totalitarian regime, the principal is required by law to call the police so the police (the one and only true totalitarian authority) can determine the veracity of the child's statement...then naturally, in a totalitarian regime, the child is punished whether it was a drug or simply Dixie Crystal from grand ma's pantry. This is done in a totalitarian regime in order to socially engineer the behaviors of other children who might consider playing such a silly little game while attending public schools.

Anyone of right mind knows that in a totalitarian regime, there is zero tolerance for child's play especially in public schools.

"Once it was determined to be neither cocaine, nor lookalike cocaine"

Determined by who and how? Do schools have drug testing kits? Should taxpayers fund these?

Why test at the school? The kid already broke the look-alike drug school policy and state statute. The substance can be tested at the police station, and the kid re-charged if it turns out to be positive for cocaine.

The boy will be traumatized, he could end up stabbing his mother....( bwteim)

Bwteim,

Probably not. But, I am sure the experience was horrifying for him ( emotional child abuse). More likely he will learn to hate school. In the process not do as well academically.

And,,,people wonder why so few boys are showing up at college?

This is just another example of government schools emasculating boys.

But,,,,all the children know about this incident as well now. It is abusive for them as well to witness this police action.

Takenoprisoner,

Uh,oh! Soon Theoting will be accusing you of using inflammatory language that is detracting from your message. ( sarcasm)

You have it nailed! It is time for us to use the words that point out the police state nature of government schools and it indoctrination agenda.

Also....we should stop being polite to the parents who place their kids in nut houses. We should be asking the pointed question, "Why are you doing this?? Why are you sending your child into such an abusive environment?"

“Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against - then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.”
