LOL! Sounds like Howard Hughes.
We had a little extra cash in the 90s. Instead of ratcheting up our standard of living, we paid off our house and debts. We are now debt free.
Yes, if we had kept the money in the market, we might have a lot more money now. However, if we had upgraded our house, bought an expensive car, etc. it would have been tough for us when I was laid off a couple of years ago.
So, in my little piece of the world, I am independent and it feels great. Money has bought me happiness.

A life spent in the pursuit of "things" is a wasted life.
It could only be out of ignorance and the brainwashing of Hollywood that a man would trade peace, joy, love and happiness - the rewards of godliness; for entertainment, thrills and comfort - the rewards of money.
To love what is created, more than the Creator, is idolatry - an offense to God's 1st Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me".
"Know this also, that in the last days grievous times will be at hand. For men will be self-lovers, money-lovers, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, unyielding, false accusers, without self-control, savage, despisers of good, traitors, reckless, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness, but denying the power of it; even turn away from these. For of these are those who creep into houses and lead captive silly women loaded with sins, led away with different kinds of lusts, ever learning and never able to come to the full knowledge of the truth" (2 Timothy 3:1-7).
Are you a good person?

I recall 13 gave him a life-time contract. He was old or looked old way back when I was still living in Houston (around 1996). Is he still doing the SLIM IN THE ICE MACHINE bit?

I say to anyone who thinks money does not buy happiness, go ahead and quit your job and stop your check and just see how happy you can get.
I have offered a couple people the opportunity to swap bank accounts and income.
No takers.

For most people, happiness lasts about as long as a case of the hiccups.

It is totally off topic, but.....
A sure fire, instant cure for the hiccups...
2 tablespoons of dry granulated sugar, you must chew it, not let it dissolve...works every time.

I first hold my breath for two minutes, if that doesn't work, I go to the sugar bowl, too.

I was thinking the same thing. If they have a similar red state blue state like we have in the US, it wouldn't surprise me if the big city has a greater percentage of liberals who tend not to believe in much. Liberals tend to be the most miserable, selfish people on the face of the earth.
Look at the Hollywood screw-ups. They can't run out of money even if they eat it, yet most of them don't seem too happy with their life.

LOL!
That is a first-rate response.
