Most of what you hear on Hamilton is the result of a concerted smear campaign on the part of Jefforson (the nation's first liberal) and his followers.

I strongly recommend you read Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. This guy who was shot is the principal reason why the U.S. is a nation we are proud to call home.
Its a long read but I assure you, that the experience will be an incredible one.

There was a C-Span book program that addressed 3 different books on Hamilton which came out a few years ago . . . probably the 200th anniversary of Hamilton's death. They made the point that the US as we know it is less a Jeffersonian Democracy than a Hamiltonian Republic. His commercial vision was for America as we know it.
