In 1959 Disney did The Swamp Fox about Francis Marion (starring Leslie Nielson, of all people)
I always conflate that with the Civil War story of the Grey Ghost, also done by Disney (1967).
Both Reb and Yankee Strangers,
They Called us Mosby's Rangers
North and South they know our fame
Grey Ghost is what they called me
John Mosby is my name.
Add to that things like The Scarecrow (with Patrick McGoohan - 1964) and you get the notion that Uncle Walt knew his stuff.
