Happy Valentines Day -
I heard our national symbol The American Bald Eagle is to be soaring again.
Is this a great omen?
If you ever been to Alaska you have to wonder how they were ever on the list to begin with
We have a house on the Cheasapeake Bay and a pair of nesting eales in a tall pine tree right along the road to the house. They are remarkable to watch. The young one this year came and stood on our pier.
They're tasty birds. Like a cross between California Condor and Spotted Owl.
A little stringier than Trumpeter Swan.
Mmmmmm ... eagleburgers!
Now they're on the Threatened Species List.

I spotted a double breasted mattress thrasher the other day.
God bless the troops who are doing their best to make it happen.
it turns out that there were more bald eagles than they had realized as many of them were doing the comb-over thing....
A lot like baby seal
I saw a bald eagle near Myakka Park (near Sarasota, FL) in 1988. Saw a bald eagle flying over Conneaut Lake, PA, in 1995. Those are the only two I have ever seen.
I have seen a lot of osprey. They look a lot like a bald eagle, but are smaller and have a black band going through the eye area.
I'm glad to hear that they have made a good comeback.
There is a nesting pair with a third adult that has made its home on a stretch of the Llano River in the Hill country of Texas. It has become quite a tourist stop. I hope they at least keep these birds on a protected list.
I saw one last week on the Big Elk River in Maryland. It was perched in a dead tree along the shore. Very cool!
Can we bring back DDT now?
I heard a report that we Americans (as normal) are atfault for all the deaths in Africa becuase we banned DDT that worked so well here and should have been used there.
I hope you are not sick enough to be seriously thinking of hunting them...if so, you are pretty much beneath contempt.
Of course it's good news. Though the birds will still be protected, as they should be.
Hunting season? I don't see a good reason. From what I hear, they don't taste any better than coot....
Besides...I hear predatory birds taste like so much rotten meat passed through ... well through a predatory bird.....
