827 Seattle students informed they will be freshmen again...
Nearly one in four Seattle Public Schools sophomores is missing required credits and has been reclassified as a freshman, potentially delaying graduation.
The move, effective this semester, was part of a package of changes the district announced in October to help better prepare high school students to pass the Washington Assessment of Student Learning and graduate.
Under district policy, high school students have to complete five credits a year to advance to the next grade.
At some schools, the rate was far higher than one in four students.
At Rainier Beach and Cleveland high schools, for example, more than 40 percent of the sophomores were reclassified as freshmen.

They obviously need more money. My first thought as well. Isn't this a case of a conflict of interests? Especially in a day of declining secondary school enrollments in many places?
Schools get federal funding, and state as well, dependent upon how many students they have. While it's clear that the system is defunct for the most part regarding public schools, one has to raise an eyebrow at this action.

It's just a matter of MORE money for education....and condoms dispensers in the hall....and more "diversity training"...more liberal indoctination...And continued tenure for teachers no smarter than their idiotic students.
The monopoly of public education without competition from private schooling and vouchers is the death of this country.

Actually, not so surprising. Count how many people cannot tell time unless they have a digital watch? How many kids cannot tie their own shoes because of velcro fasteners on shoes. Shoe polish? What the hell is shoe polish? I wear sneakers all the time. To school, to shootings, to the mall, swimming, dating, playing Xbox.

Why do we continue to classify students according to some age group? It's got the be the dopiest way of doing things. Each child is an INDIVIDUAL and thus has different learning needs.
For instance, if that "freshman" can't read a book, they've got bigger problems than just being held back a year.

That probably has more to do with "desire" to work than "experience" or "job training." Most of those who choose to sit on their sorry asses for a living know that the Imperial Federal Government will take care of them from cradle to grave if they will only vote to keep them in office. Spread the socialism around with a knife, evenly over the population, so that we are all even, thus led by those who were "born to lead us" and who "has the knowledge, experience, education" to lead we poor, misdirected, peasants. Way too many people fall for that. Instead of doing it yourself, being an individual, they choose to be part of a "group." You know groups don't you? The "sick, poor, misguided, lame, aged, seasoned, disabled, dumb, alcoholic, drug addict, blacks, whites, greens, yellows, browns, blues, purples, poka-dotted races." You know groups. The socialist democrat/Islamic loving liberals, love to put people into GROUPS! We have GROUP think. No individual achievement. So, in that opinion, I think that ARod owes me money. He did not get those great stats and that $25 million contract on his own. I watched him. I am part of the group of "watchers" and "hero worshipers," thus we all should get some of that money! Don't cha think???? :-)

To: george76

The WASL is so stupid and really starting to get on my nerves. They have elementary kids stressed out months before they actually administer the test. Does anyone know if a parent can opt out of this test in the lower grade levels?
To: dropandgimme20
That's because 50% of them are below average in math. Actually, I think it's only about half.
72.4% of all statistics are made up on the spot.....

There are only 3,300 pupils in the 10th grade in Seattle? I thought Seattle was a larger city than that.
To: RetiredArmy
I think it also has to do with the fact that they don't get any training from their Dads because--one for thing--they have no dads. I must say that it applies to the middle-class as well. When I was a kid I learned from my dad how to use an ax. He had had to learn to use an ax in otder to cut firewood. I didn't but used it to help clear brush on a lease. I remember an occasion where he was talking to someone while I was working. the fellow commented that he was impressed I could use an ax, because his son, a civil engineer, handled an ax "like a girl." Of course this puffed me up a bit--and made my dad grin.

Good for your dad. Sounds like mine. He was born and raised "country." He could do a heck of a lot of different things. Work on a car, build, electric, plumbing, you name it, he could do some of it. The old jack of all trades types. A welder by profession. Damn, I miss that man. He has been gone 31 years now.
